A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing and Replacing Casement Window Cranks

Casement windows are a popular choice for homeowners due to their versatility, energy efficiency, and ease of operation. One of the key components that make these windows so user-friendly is the casement window crank. This mechanism allows you to easily open and close your windows, while also providing a tight seal when closed. Over time, however, these cranks can wear out or become damaged, necessitating a replacement. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of casement window cranks, discussing their importance, how to choose the right one, and how to replace them when needed.

Understanding the Importance of Casement Window Cranks

Before we dive into the specifics of choosing and replacing casement window cranks, it's essential to understand their importance in the overall functionality of your windows. The crank mechanism is responsible for opening and closing the window, as well as locking it securely in place when not in use. A properly functioning crank ensures that your window remains easy to operate and provides optimal energy efficiency by creating a tight seal.

When a casement window crank begins to wear out or becomes damaged, it can cause several issues. First, it can become difficult to open and close your window, which can be frustrating and inconvenient. Additionally, a faulty crank may not provide a proper seal, leading to drafts and decreased energy efficiency. In some cases, a damaged crank can even pose a security risk, as it may not lock your window securely. For these reasons, it's crucial to address any issues with your casement window cranks promptly.

Choosing the Right Casement Window Crank

When it comes to selecting a replacement casement window crank, there are several factors to consider. Here are some tips to help you choose the right one for your needs:

1. Compatibility:First and foremost, ensure that the replacement crank you choose is compatible with your specific casement window. There are numerous types and styles of casement windows, and not all cranks will work with every model. Check your window's manufacturer information or consult with a professional to determine the appropriate crank for your window.

2. Material:Casement window cranks can be made from various materials, including plastic, aluminum, and zinc. Consider the durability and longevity of each material when making your decision. While plastic cranks may be more affordable, they may not last as long as their metal counterparts.

3. Finish:Choose a crank with a finish that matches or complements your existing window hardware. Common finishes include white, bronze, brass, and brushed nickel. This will ensure a cohesive look throughout your home.

4. Ease of Installation:Some casement window cranks are easier to install than others. Look for one with clear instructions and minimal additional hardware required. This will make the replacement process smoother and less time-consuming.

Replacing Your Casement Window Crank

Once you have chosen the right replacement casement window crank, it's time to tackle the installation process. Follow these steps to replace your old crank with ease:

1. Remove the Old Crank:Using a screwdriver, remove the screws that hold the crank handle and cover plate in place. Carefully remove the handle and cover plate, exposing the crank mechanism.

2. Detach the Operator Arm:Locate the operator arm, which connects the crank mechanism to the window sash. Remove the screw or clip securing the operator arm to the sash, and gently disconnect it.

3. Remove the Crank Mechanism:Unscrew the screws holding the crank mechanism to the window frame. Carefully remove the old crank mechanism, taking care not to damage the surrounding frame or components.

4. Install the New Crank Mechanism:Position the new crank mechanism in the same location as the old one, aligning the screw holes. Secure the mechanism in place using the provided screws.

5. Reattach the Operator Arm:Connect the operator arm to the new crank mechanism, and secure it to the window sash using the screw or clip.

6. Replace the Cover Plate and Handle:Reinstall the cover plate and handle, ensuring they are securely fastened with screws.

7. Test the New Crank:Open and close your casement window to ensure the new crank operates smoothly and securely locks the window in place.

By following these steps and choosing the right replacement casement window crank, you can ensure the continued functionality and efficiency of your casement windows. Remember that proper maintenance and prompt attention to any issues will prolong the life of your windows and keep your home comfortable and secure.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
