Identifying Common Anderson Casement Window Issues

Before diving into the repair process, it's essential to identify the specific issue you're facing. Common problems with Anderson casement windows include:

1. Broken or damaged hardware

2. Worn or torn weatherstripping

3. Cracked or broken glass

4. Window sash not closing properly

5. Difficulty in opening or closing the window

Once you've determined the issue, you can move on to the repair process.

Repairing Broken or Damaged Hardware

If your Anderson casement window is not functioning correctly due to broken or damaged hardware, you'll need to replace the faulty components. Here's how:

1. Remove the window sash: Carefully unlock and open the window. Then, remove the sash by detaching it from the hinges.

2. Identify the damaged hardware: Examine the window sash and frame to locate the broken or damaged hardware, such as the lock, handle, or operator.

3. Purchase replacement hardware: Visit your local hardware store or contact Anderson directly to purchase the necessary replacement parts.

4. Install the new hardware: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the new hardware on the window sash and frame.

5. Reattach the window sash: Once the new hardware is in place, reattach the window sash to the hinges and test the window's operation.

Fixing Worn or Torn Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping helps to seal your Anderson casement window, preventing drafts and improving energy efficiency. If you notice drafts or visible wear on the weatherstripping, it's time for a replacement. Here's how to do it:

1. Remove the old weatherstripping: Carefully peel away the worn or torn weatherstripping from the window frame.

2. Clean the window frame: Use a mild detergent and warm water to clean the area where the weatherstripping was removed. Allow the frame to dry completely.

3. Measure and cut the new weatherstripping: Measure the length of the window frame where the new weatherstripping will be installed. Cut the weatherstripping to the appropriate length.

4. Install the new weatherstripping: Peel off the backing from the adhesive side of the weatherstripping and carefully press it into place on the window frame. Make sure it's properly aligned and firmly pressed against the frame for a secure seal.

5. Test the window: Close the window and ensure that the new weatherstripping effectively seals the window, preventing drafts.

Repairing Cracked or Broken Glass

A cracked or broken glass pane in your Anderson casement window can compromise its energy efficiency and pose a safety hazard. Here's how to replace the glass:

1. Remove the window sash: Carefully unlock and open the window. Then, remove the sash by detaching it from the hinges.

2. Remove the broken glass: Put on safety gloves and carefully remove the broken glass from the window sash. Dispose of the glass safely.

3. Clean the window sash: Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any remaining glass shards, and then clean the sash with a mild detergent and warm water.

4. Measure the window sash: Measure the dimensions of the window sash to determine the size of the replacement glass pane.

5. Purchase the replacement glass: Visit a local glass supplier or contact Anderson directly to order a replacement glass pane of the appropriate size.

6. Install the new glass: Carefully insert the new glass pane into the window sash and secure it in place using glazing points and glazing putty.

7. Reattach the window sash: Once the new glass is installed, reattach the window sash to the hinges and test the window's operation.

Adjusting a Window Sash That's Not Closing Properly

If your Anderson casement window is not closing properly, it may require a simple adjustment. Here's how to do it:

1. Inspect the window: Examine the window frame, sash, and hardware for any visible damage or obstructions that may be preventing the window from closing properly.

2. Adjust the hinges: If the window sash is not aligned correctly, you may need to adjust the hinges. Loosen the screws on the hinges and adjust the position of the sash until it closes properly. Tighten the screws to secure the sash in place.

3. Lubricate the hardware: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the window's hardware, such as the hinges, lock, and operator, to ensure smooth operation.

4. Test the window: Close and open the window several times to ensure that the adjustment was successful and the window now closes properly.

Troubleshooting Difficulty in Opening or Closing the Window

If your Anderson casement window is difficult to open or close, follow these steps to diagnose and fix the issue:

1. Clean the window tracks: Dirt and debris can accumulate in the window tracks, making it difficult to open or close the window. Use a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth to clean the tracks thoroughly.

2. Lubricate the hardware: Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the window's hardware, such as the hinges, lock, and operator, to ensure smooth operation.

3. Inspect the hardware: Check the window's hardware for any visible damage or wear that may be causing the issue. If necessary, replace the faulty components as described in the "Repairing Broken or Damaged Hardware" section.

4. Adjust the window sash: If the window sash is not aligned correctly, it may be difficult to open or close the window. Adjust the sash as described in the "Adjusting a Window Sash That's Not Closing Properly" section.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
