Casement Window Parts: A Comprehensive Guide to Components and Functionality

Casement windows have long been a popular choice for homeowners due to their versatility, energy efficiency, and ease of operation. With their hinged design and crank mechanism, casement windows provide excellent ventilation and unobstructed views. Like any window, however, casement windows are comprised of various parts that work together to ensure smooth functionality. In this blog post, we'll delve into the different components of casement windows and discuss their roles in the overall window system.

The Frame and Sash

The casement window frame is the outer structure that holds the window in place and provides support. It is typically made of wood, vinyl, aluminum, or fiberglass, and consists of the head, jamb, and sill. The head is the horizontal top part of the frame, while the jamb is the vertical side part, and the sill is the horizontal bottom part.

The sash is the moveable part of the window that holds the glass panes and is attached to the frame with hinges. The sash is composed of stiles (vertical members) and rails (horizontal members). The glass pane is secured within the sash by a glazing bead or putty.

Hinges and Operators

Casement windows are hinged either on the left or right side, allowing them to swing open like a door. The hinges are typically made of brass or stainless steel and are designed to support the weight of the sash. There are two main types of hinges used in casement windows: butt hinges and friction hinges. Butt hinges are the traditional type, consisting of two plates joined by a pin, while friction hinges provide additional resistance to control the sash movement.

The operator is the mechanism that allows you to open and close the casement window. It is usually located at the bottom of the sash and consists of a crank handle, gears, and an arm. When you turn the crank handle, the gears move the arm, which in turn pushes or pulls the sash open or closed. Some casement windows also feature a push-out mechanism, where the sash is opened by pushing it outwards.

Locks and Latches

To secure the casement window when it's closed, a lock or latch is used. The most common type of lock is the multipoint locking system, which engages multiple locking points along the sash and frame when the handle is turned. This provides a tight seal and increased security. Other types of locks include the cam lock, which uses a rotating cam to secure the sash, and the sliding latch, which slides into a groove in the frame.

Weatherstripping and Screens

Weatherstripping is an essential component of casement windows, as it helps to seal gaps between the sash and frame, preventing drafts, water infiltration, and energy loss. There are various types of weatherstripping, such as adhesive-backed foam tape, V-strip, and door sweeps, which can be made of materials like rubber, vinyl, or metal.

Screens are another important feature of casement windows, as they allow fresh air to enter your home while keeping insects and debris out. Screens are typically made of aluminum or fiberglass mesh and are mounted on the exterior side of the window. Some casement windows also have retractable screens that can be rolled up and stored when not in use.

Glazing and Glass Options

Casement windows can be fitted with various types of glass, depending on your needs and preferences. Single-pane glass is the most basic option, but it offers little insulation and energy efficiency. Double-pane glass, which consists of two layers of glass separated by a spacer, provides better insulation and is more energy-efficient. Triple-pane glass, with three layers of glass, offers even greater insulation and energy savings.

In addition to the number of panes, you can also choose from various types of glazing, such as low-emissivity (Low-E) coating, which reduces heat transfer and protects your home from UV rays, or gas-filled panes, which use argon or krypton gas between the panes to improve insulation.

In conclusion, understanding the different parts of casement windows and their roles in the overall window system can help you make informed decisions when selecting and maintaining your windows. From the frame and sash to the hinges, operators, and glazing options, each component plays a crucial role in the functionality, energy efficiency, and security of your casement windows.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

For windows and doors, hardware is as important as the engine is to the car. The continuous technological innovation of the European hardware industry has strongly promoted the performance improvement and functional innovation of windows and doors. In this project, Doorwin uses Hoppe™ multi-point locks, hinges, and handles from Germany.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
