Casement windows have been a popular choice for homeowners for centuries, offering a unique blend of style, functionality, and energy efficiency. If you're considering casement windows for your home, it's important to familiarize yourself with the terminology associated with these windows. In this comprehensive guide, we'll cover everything from the basic anatomy of a casement window to the various types and styles available on the market today.
Before diving into the different types and styles of casement windows, let's first discuss the basic components that make up these windows. Here are some key terms to know:
1. Frame:The outer structure of the window, which holds the sash in place and is typically made of wood, vinyl, or aluminum.
2. Sash:The part of the window that holds the glass panes and is hinged to the frame, allowing it to swing open and closed.
3. Muntins:Decorative strips of wood, vinyl, or metal that divide the glass panes into smaller sections.
4. Glass Panes:The transparent material that allows light to pass through the window while providing insulation and protection from the elements.
5. Hinges:The hardware that attaches the sash to the frame and allows it to swing open and closed.
6. Crank Handle:A small, rotating handle used to open and close the casement window.
7. Locking Mechanism:A latch or other device that secures the window closed for safety and energy efficiency.
Now that we understand the basic components of a casement window, let's explore the different types available. Each type offers its own unique set of benefits and drawbacks, so it's important to choose the one that best suits your needs and preferences.
1. Single Casement:This type features a single sash that is hinged on one side and swings outward. Single casement windows are a popular choice for smaller openings and provide excellent ventilation and unobstructed views.
2. Double Casement (French Casement):Double casement windows consist of two sashes that are hinged on opposite sides and open outward, similar to French doors. These windows offer a larger opening for ventilation and create a sense of symmetry and elegance.
3. Push-Out Casement:Instead of using a crank handle, push-out casement windows are designed to be pushed open and pulled closed by hand. This type of casement window is ideal for those who prefer a more traditional, hands-on approach to operating their windows.
4. Inswing Casement:While most casement windows are designed to swing outward, inswing casement windows open inward. This design is less common but can be a practical solution for homes with limited exterior space or specific architectural requirements.
In addition to the various types of casement windows, there are also several different styles to choose from. These styles can be categorized based on the materials used, the design of the muntins, and the overall aesthetic of the window.
1. Wooden Casement Windows:These windows feature a classic, timeless look that complements a wide range of architectural styles. Wooden casement windows can be painted or stained to match your home's exterior and are often chosen for their natural beauty and warmth.
2. Vinyl Casement Windows:Vinyl windows are known for their durability, low maintenance, and energy efficiency. They are available in a variety of colors and finishes, making it easy to find the perfect match for your home's exterior.
3. Aluminum Casement Windows:Aluminum windows are lightweight, strong, and resistant to corrosion, making them a popular choice for modern and contemporary homes. They are available in a variety of finishes, including anodized and powder-coated options.
4. Divided Lite Casement Windows:This style features muntins that divide the glass panes into smaller sections, creating a classic, traditional look. Divided lite casement windows can be customized with different muntin patterns and designs, allowing you to create a truly unique window for your home.
5. Picture Casement Windows:These windows combine the functionality of a casement window with the large, unobstructed views of a picture window. They are often used in combination with other window types to create a striking visual effect and provide maximum natural light.
With so many types and styles of casement windows available, it can be overwhelming to decide which one is right for your home. Here are some factors to consider when making your decision:
1. Architectural Style:Choose a casement window that complements the overall aesthetic of your home, whether it's a traditional, modern, or contemporary design.
2. Functionality:Consider how you plan to use your casement windows and which type will best meet your needs for ventilation, ease of operation, and security.
3. Energy Efficiency:Look for casement windows with features like double or triple-pane glass, low-E coatings, and insulated frames to help reduce energy costs and improve your home's comfort.
4. Maintenance:Consider the materials used in the construction of the window and the level of maintenance required to keep it looking and functioning at its best.
By taking the time to understand the terminology and options available, you can confidently choose the perfect casement window for your home. Whether you're looking for a classic wooden window or a sleek, modern aluminum design, there's a casement window out there to suit your needs and enhance your home's beauty and functionality.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
