When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, there are many factors to consider. Two popular window styles that often come up in the decision-making process are casement windows and double hung windows. In this blog post, we'll delve into the pros and cons of each window type, providing you with a comprehensive comparison to help you make an informed decision.
1. Excellent Ventilation: Casement windows are hinged on the side and swing outward, which allows for maximum airflow. This makes them ideal for rooms that require good ventilation, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
2. Unobstructed Views: Since casement windows have no bars or sashes dividing the glass, they provide an unobstructed view of the outdoors. This can be particularly appealing for homeowners who want to enjoy their scenic surroundings.
3. Energy Efficiency: Casement windows create a tight seal when closed, which helps to prevent drafts and improve energy efficiency. This can lead to lower heating and cooling costs for homeowners.
4. Ease of Operation: Casement windows are easy to open and close with a simple crank mechanism. This can be especially beneficial for hard-to-reach areas, such as above a kitchen sink or in a tall, vaulted room.
1. Limited Width: Casement windows typically have a maximum width of about 36 inches. This can limit their use in some spaces or require the installation of multiple windows side by side to fill a larger opening.
2. Potential for Damage: Since casement windows swing outward, they can be more susceptible to damage from strong winds, flying debris, or accidental impact.
3. Higher Cost: Casement windows tend to be more expensive than double hung windows due to their more complex design and hardware.
1. Versatility: Double hung windows feature two sashes that slide vertically, allowing for both the top and bottom sections to open. This offers homeowners a variety of ventilation options and makes them suitable for various room types.
2. Classic Style: Double hung windows have a traditional, timeless appearance that complements many architectural styles. This can be especially appealing for older homes or those looking to maintain a classic aesthetic.
3. Ease of Cleaning: Both sashes of a double hung window can be tilted inward, making it easy to clean the exterior glass from inside the home. This is a significant advantage for windows located on upper floors or in hard-to-reach areas.
4. Lower Cost: Double hung windows are generally more affordable than casement windows, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners.
1. Less Ventilation: While double hung windows do offer some flexibility in terms of ventilation, they don't provide the same level of airflow as casement windows. This is because only half of the window can be open at a time.
2. Potential for Air Leakage: Double hung windows are more prone to air leakage than casement windows due to their sliding sash design. This can lead to drafts and decreased energy efficiency.
3. Limited Aesthetic Appeal: Some homeowners may find the appearance of double hung windows less appealing than the unobstructed views provided by casement windows.
In summary, both casement and double hung windows have their unique advantages and disadvantages. Casement windows excel in providing excellent ventilation, unobstructed views, and energy efficiency, while double hung windows offer versatility, a classic style, and ease of cleaning. On the other hand, casement windows can be limited in width, more susceptible to damage, and more expensive, while double hung windows may provide less ventilation, be more prone to air leakage, and have limited aesthetic appeal for some homeowners.
Ultimately, the choice between casement and double hung windows will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and budget. By carefully considering the pros and cons of each window type, you can make a well-informed decision that will best suit your home and lifestyle.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
