Casement windows have long been a beloved architectural feature, gracing homes and buildings for centuries with their timeless elegance. In this blog post, we will explore the history and enduring appeal of old-style casement windows, as well as the various designs and materials that have been used throughout the years. So, let us embark on this nostalgic journey through time, and discover the charm and beauty of these classic windows.
Casement windows can be traced back to medieval Europe, where they were initially constructed of wood and fitted with oiled parchment or cloth to keep out drafts and the elements. As glass production improved in the 16th century, glazed casement windows became more common, offering better insulation and protection from the weather.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, casement windows evolved further, with the introduction of metal frames and hinges, allowing the windows to be opened and closed more easily. These advancements also led to the development of the "French casement" design, which features two side-by-side windows that open outwards, providing a larger, unobstructed view.
Casement windows remained popular throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras, with many homes from these periods still featuring their original windows. In the 20th century, however, the popularity of casement windows began to wane, as more modern window styles, such as sliding sash windows, gained favor. Nevertheless, casement windows have experienced a resurgence in recent years, as homeowners rediscover their classic charm and versatility.
One of the most enduring appeals of old-style casement windows is the variety of designs and materials available. From simple, unadorned wooden frames to ornate, leaded glass designs, these windows can be customized to suit any architectural style or personal taste.
Wooden casement windows are perhaps the most traditional and well-known style, with oak, pine, and mahogany being popular choices for their durability and natural beauty. Wooden frames can be painted or stained to match the exterior of a home, and they can be adorned with intricate carvings or moldings for added visual interest.
Metal casement windows, typically made from wrought iron or steel, offer a more modern and industrial aesthetic. These windows are often chosen for their strength and durability, as well as their slim profile, which allows for larger expanses of glass and unobstructed views. Metal casement windows can be finished in a variety of colors and textures, and they can also be embellished with decorative elements, such as scrollwork or floral motifs.
Leaded glass casement windows are a stunning and distinctive option, featuring intricate patterns and designs created by connecting individual pieces of glass with lead strips. This style of window was particularly popular during the Arts and Crafts movement, and it remains a favorite choice for those looking to add a touch of historical charm to their homes.
While old-style casement windows may evoke a sense of nostalgia, it is important to note that modern advancements have greatly improved their functionality and energy efficiency. Double-glazed glass, weatherstripping, and high-quality hardware all contribute to a more comfortable and eco-friendly home environment.
Many homeowners also opt to install period-appropriate window dressings, such as wooden shutters or heavy drapes, to further enhance the insulating properties of their casement windows.
For those fortunate enough to own a home with original casement windows, preserving and restoring these architectural treasures is often a labor of love. Regular maintenance, such as cleaning, painting, and lubricating hinges, can help to prolong the life of these windows and prevent issues such as rot or rust.
In cases where the windows have been damaged or have deteriorated beyond repair, professional restoration services can often replicate the original design and materials, ensuring that the windows remain true to the home's architectural heritage.
Old-style casement windows offer a timeless and versatile design that has graced homes for centuries. With their rich history, variety of materials and designs, and modern advancements, it is no wonder that these windows continue to charm homeowners and architects alike. Whether you are looking to restore original casement windows or install new ones in a period-appropriate style, these classic windows are sure to add a touch of elegance and nostalgia to any home.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
