Double Hung vs Casement Windows: A Comprehensive Guide to Choosing the Right Window Style for Your Home

Homeowners often face the dilemma of choosing between double hung and casement windows when considering a window replacement or a new installation. Both window styles have their own set of advantages and unique features that set them apart. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the key differences between double hung and casement windows, helping you make an informed decision for your home.

What are Double Hung Windows?

Double hung windows are one of the most popular window styles among homeowners. These windows feature two vertically sliding sashes that can be opened and closed independently. This allows for better ventilation and ease of cleaning, as both the upper and lower sashes can be tilted inward for easy access. Double hung windows are a versatile option that can suit a variety of architectural styles, from traditional to contemporary.

Pros of Double Hung Windows

1. Ease of Cleaning:The tilt-in feature of double hung windows makes cleaning both the interior and exterior surfaces a breeze. No need to go outside or use a ladder to clean the exterior glass.

2. Improved Ventilation:Since both sashes can be opened, double hung windows provide better airflow, allowing you to control the amount of fresh air entering your home.

3. Energy Efficiency:Double hung windows with energy-efficient glass options can help reduce your heating and cooling costs.

4. Wide Variety of Styles:Double hung windows are available in a range of materials, colors, and finishes, making it easy to find the perfect match for your home's aesthetic.

What are Casement Windows?

Casement windows are hinged on one side and open outward using a crank or lever. These windows are known for their unobstructed views and excellent ventilation capabilities. Casement windows are often found in modern and contemporary homes, as well as European-style architecture.

Pros of Casement Windows

1. Unobstructed Views:Casement windows have a larger glass area, which means they offer a clear, uninterrupted view of the outdoors.

2. Excellent Ventilation:Casement windows can catch side breezes and funnel them into your home, providing optimal airflow and ventilation.

3. Energy Efficiency:The tight seal created when casement windows are closed makes them highly energy efficient, helping to reduce your heating and cooling costs.

4. Enhanced Security:Casement windows typically have a multi-point locking system, providing an added layer of security for your home.

Comparing Double Hung and Casement Windows

Now that we've covered the basics of double hung and casement windows, let's take a closer look at how they compare in terms of ventilation, energy efficiency, maintenance, and aesthetics.

Ventilation

While both double hung and casement windows provide excellent ventilation, casement windows have a slight edge due to their ability to catch side breezes. However, double hung windows allow for more control over airflow, as you can open both the top and bottom sashes to create a natural convection effect.

Energy Efficiency

Both window styles can be energy efficient when paired with the right glass options and proper installation. Casement windows are known for their tight seal, which helps prevent air leakage and drafts. Double hung windows can also be energy efficient, but they may be more prone to air leakage due to their sliding sashes.

Maintenance

When it comes to maintenance, double hung windows have the advantage. Their tilt-in sashes make cleaning a breeze, while casement windows may require you to go outside or use a ladder to clean the exterior glass. However, casement windows have fewer moving parts, which could result in less wear and tear over time.

Aesthetics

The choice between double hung and casement windows often comes down to personal preference and the style of your home. Double hung windows are versatile and can suit a variety of architectural styles, while casement windows are more commonly found in modern and contemporary homes, as well as European-style architecture.

Ultimately, the decision between double hung and casement windows should be based on your specific needs, preferences, and the style of your home. Both window styles have their own set of advantages and unique features that make them excellent options for any homeowner. By considering factors such as ventilation, energy efficiency, maintenance, and aesthetics, you can confidently choose the right window style for your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
