The first step in framing a casement window is to measure the rough opening for the window. This is the space between the studs where the window will be installed. Use your tape measure to determine the width and height of the rough opening, and make a note of these measurements.
Next, plan the placement of the window header, sill, and casing. The header is a horizontal piece of wood that supports the weight of the wall above the window. The sill is the horizontal piece at the bottom of the rough opening, and the casing is the vertical pieces on either side of the window. These components should be sized according to the dimensions of your rough opening and the size of the casement window you've chosen.
Using your circular saw or handsaw, cut the wood studs, header, sill, and casing to the appropriate lengths based on your measurements and plans. Then, assemble the frame by nailing or screwing the components together. The header should be attached to the top of the casing, and the sill should be attached to the bottom. Make sure the frame is square by checking that the corners form 90-degree angles.
Once the frame is assembled, it's time to install it in the rough opening. Position the frame in the opening, making sure it's level and plumb. Use wood shims to adjust the frame as needed, and secure it in place with nails or screws driven into the surrounding studs.
With the frame securely in place, it's important to insulate and seal the area around the window to prevent drafts and moisture infiltration. Install insulation between the window frame and the rough opening, taking care not to compress the insulation, as this can reduce its effectiveness. Then, apply a vapor barrier over the insulation, sealing any seams with tape.
Now that the frame is in place and insulated, you're ready to install the casement window. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for your specific window model, ensuring that the window is level, plumb, and square as you secure it to the frame. Use shims as needed to make any adjustments.
With the casement window installed, you can now finish the interior and exterior of the window opening. On the interior, install drywall or another wall finish material around the window, and trim the edges with molding. On the exterior, apply siding or other finish material, and seal any gaps with caulk to prevent moisture infiltration.
