How to Install Andersen Casement Windows: A Step-by-Step Guide

If you're looking to upgrade your home with new windows, Andersen casement windows are an excellent choice. Known for their durability, energy efficiency, and ease of use, these windows are a popular option for homeowners. In this blog post, we'll walk you through the process of installing Andersen casement windows in your home, from preparation to final touches. With our step-by-step guide, you'll be able to tackle this project like a pro.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials on hand. You'll need the following:

Tape measure

Level

Hammer

Screwdriver

Drill

Saw

Utility knife

Caulk gun

Shims

Window flashing

Window sealant

Insulation

Andersen casement window

Window hardware (included with your window)

Step 2: Measure and Prepare the Opening

First, you'll need to measure the opening where the window will be installed. Measure the width and height of the opening, and make sure it's square by checking the diagonals. If the opening is not square, you may need to make adjustments before proceeding.

Next, remove any existing window or window frame from the opening. Clean the area around the opening, removing any debris or old sealant. If necessary, repair any damaged areas of the wall surrounding the opening.

Step 3: Apply Window Flashing

To protect against water infiltration, you'll need to apply window flashing to the opening. Cut strips of flashing to fit the width and height of the opening, and apply them to the sides and top of the opening, overlapping the corners for a watertight seal. Make sure the flashing is level and secure.

Step 4: Dry Fit the Window

Before installing the window, do a dry fit to ensure it fits properly in the opening. Carefully lift the window into place, centering it in the opening. Check that the window is level and plumb, making any necessary adjustments with shims.

Step 5: Install the Window

Once you're satisfied with the fit, remove the window from the opening. Apply a bead of window sealant around the perimeter of the opening, focusing on the corners and edges. Carefully lift the window back into place, pressing it firmly against the sealant for a secure fit.

Using the provided hardware, secure the window to the framing with screws. Start with the top corners, then move to the bottom corners, and finally, the center of each side. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can cause the window to warp.

Step 6: Insulate and Seal the Window

To ensure your Andersen casement window is energy efficient, you'll need to insulate the gap between the window and the framing. Use expanding foam insulation or fiberglass insulation to fill the gap, taking care not to overstuff the space.

Once the insulation is in place, apply another layer of window flashing over the flange of the window, overlapping the previous layer of flashing. This will create a watertight seal around the window.

Step 7: Install Interior Trim and Hardware

With the window securely in place, you can now install the interior trim. Measure and cut the trim pieces to fit around the window, and secure them in place with finishing nails.

Finally, install the window hardware, including the handle and locking mechanism, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 8: Enjoy Your New Andersen Casement Window

Congratulations! You've successfully installed an Andersen casement window in your home. With its energy-efficient design and easy-to-use hardware, you'll enjoy the benefits of this window for years to come.

Remember that regular maintenance, such as cleaning and inspecting the window sealant, will help extend the life of your window and keep it functioning at its best. With proper care, your Andersen casement window will be a beautiful and functional addition to your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

For windows and doors, hardware is as important as the engine is to the car. The continuous technological innovation of the European hardware industry has strongly promoted the performance improvement and functional innovation of windows and doors. In this project, Doorwin uses Hoppe™ multi-point locks, hinges, and handles from Germany.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
