As summer approaches, the need for a comfortable and cool living environment becomes increasingly important. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is by installing an air conditioner. However, not all homes are designed to accommodate traditional window air conditioning units. Casement windows, for example, pose a unique challenge due to their design and functionality. In this blog post, we will explore the process of installing an air conditioner in a casement window, providing you with a comprehensive guide to help you beat the heat this summer.
Casement windows are hinged on one side and open outward, usually with the help of a crank or lever. They are often found in older homes and provide excellent ventilation due to their ability to catch and direct breezes into the home. However, their design makes it difficult to install a traditional window air conditioning unit.
Before you can begin the installation process, it's essential to choose the right air conditioner for your casement window. There are two main types of air conditioners that can be installed in casement windows: portable air conditioners and specially designed casement window air conditioners.
Portable air conditioners are free-standing units that can be easily moved from room to room. They often come with a window installation kit that includes a vent hose and a window bracket, which can be adapted for casement windows. These units are an excellent option for those who want flexibility in their cooling solutions or for those who cannot make permanent modifications to their windows.
Casement window air conditioners are specifically designed for installation in casement windows. They are more compact than traditional window air conditioners and are designed to fit the narrow openings of casement windows. These units typically provide more efficient cooling than portable air conditioners, but they can be more challenging to find and may be more expensive.
Before you begin the installation process, it's essential to gather the necessary tools and materials. You will need the following:
Measuring tape
Level
Screwdriver
Drill
Saw (if you need to modify the window bracket)
Window bracket or support (included with the air conditioner or purchased separately)
Weatherstripping or foam insulation
Plexiglass or plywood (if you need to create a custom window insert)
Once you have chosen the right air conditioner for your casement window and gathered the necessary tools and materials, you can begin the installation process.
1. Measure the window opening: Carefully measure the height and width of your casement window opening to ensure that the air conditioner will fit properly. Be sure to account for any obstructions, such as window locks or handles.
2. Install the window bracket or support: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to install the window bracket or support. You may need to modify the bracket to fit your casement window. Ensure that the bracket is level and secure before proceeding.
3. Create a custom window insert (if necessary): If your air conditioner does not come with a window installation kit designed for casement windows, you may need to create a custom window insert using plexiglass or plywood. Cut the material to the size of your window opening and cut a hole for the air conditioner's vent hose. Be sure to seal any gaps with weatherstripping or foam insulation.
4. Install the air conditioner: Carefully lift the air conditioner into place on the window bracket or support. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to secure the unit in place.
5. Attach the vent hose: If you are using a portable air conditioner, connect the vent hose to the air conditioner and the custom window insert or window bracket. Ensure that the hose is not kinked or obstructed.
6. Seal the window: Use weatherstripping or foam insulation to seal any gaps around the air conditioner and the window opening. This will help prevent drafts and improve the efficiency of your air conditioner.
7. Plug in the air conditioner: Plug the air conditioner into a grounded electrical outlet and turn it on. Enjoy your cool and comfortable living space!
If installing an air conditioner in your casement window is not a viable option, consider alternative cooling solutions such as:
Using fans to circulate air and create a cooling breeze
Installing a ductless mini-split air conditioner, which does not require a window for installation
Upgrading your home's insulation and sealing any air leaks to improve energy efficiency and keep your home cooler
No matter which cooling solution you choose, it's essential to prioritize energy efficiency and proper maintenance to ensure that your home stays comfortable and your energy bills stay low. With the right approach, you can keep your home cool and comfortable even with casement windows.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
