Push Out vs Crank Casement Windows: Exploring the Pros and Cons

When it comes to choosing the right windows for your home, there are numerous options available. Two popular choices are push out and crank casement windows. Both types of windows have their advantages and drawbacks, and understanding the differences between them can help homeowners make an informed decision. In this blog post, we will explore the pros and cons of both push out and crank casement windows, as well as offer some tips on how to choose the right style for your home.

Push Out Casement Windows

Push out casement windows, as the name suggests, are windows that open by pushing them outward. They are hinged on one side and can be opened with a gentle push, making them easy to operate. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of push out casement windows:

Pros

1. Ease of use: Push out casement windows are incredibly easy to operate, requiring minimal effort to open and close. This makes them an excellent choice for those with limited mobility or strength, as well as for homes with hard-to-reach windows.

2. Aesthetic appeal: Push out casement windows have a sleek and modern look that can enhance the appearance of any home. They are available in a variety of materials and finishes, allowing homeowners to customize their windows to match their personal style and the architectural design of their home.

3. Energy efficiency: Push out casement windows offer excellent energy efficiency, as they create a tight seal when closed. This helps to keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, reducing your energy bills and making your home more comfortable.

Cons

1. Limited ventilation: One of the drawbacks of push out casement windows is that they can only be opened to a certain extent, which may limit the amount of fresh air that can enter your home. This can be especially problematic in rooms that require more ventilation, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

2. Higher cost: Push out casement windows tend to be more expensive than their crank counterparts, due to their unique design and construction. This may be a consideration for budget-conscious homeowners.

Crank Casement Windows

Crank casement windows, on the other hand, are windows that open by turning a crank handle. They are hinged on one side, like push out casement windows, but require the use of a crank to open and close. Here are some of the pros and cons of crank casement windows:

Pros

1. Increased ventilation: Crank casement windows can be opened wider than push out casement windows, allowing for greater airflow and improved ventilation. This makes them an ideal choice for rooms that need more fresh air, such as kitchens and bathrooms.

2. Ease of cleaning: Crank casement windows can be easily cleaned from the inside, as they can be fully opened to allow access to both sides of the glass. This makes maintaining your windows a breeze, especially for those hard-to-reach areas.

3. Affordability: Crank casement windows are generally more affordable than push out casement windows, making them a popular choice for homeowners on a budget.

Cons

1. Mechanical issues: One of the main drawbacks of crank casement windows is that they rely on a mechanical crank system to open and close. This can lead to wear and tear over time, potentially resulting in the need for repairs or replacement.

2. Less aesthetic appeal: While crank casement windows are available in a variety of materials and finishes, some homeowners may find their appearance less appealing than push out casement windows. The visible crank handle can detract from the overall aesthetic of the window.

Choosing the Right Casement Window for Your Home

When deciding between push out and crank casement windows, there are several factors to consider. First and foremost, think about your personal preferences and the style of your home. Do you prefer the sleek look of push out casement windows or the practicality of crank casement windows?

Next, consider the ventilation needs of your home. If you require more airflow in certain rooms, crank casement windows may be the better option. On the other hand, if ease of use and energy efficiency are more important to you, push out casement windows could be the right choice.

Finally, take your budget into account. While push out casement windows may be more expensive upfront, their energy efficiency and durability could save you money in the long run. If you're on a tight budget, however, crank casement windows may be the more cost-effective option.

Ultimately, the choice between push out and crank casement windows comes down to your personal preferences, needs, and budget. By carefully weighing the pros and cons of each option, you can make an informed decision that will enhance the beauty, comfort, and functionality of your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
