Replacing Casement Windows with Double Hung: A Smooth Transition for Your Home

When it comes to home renovation, window replacement is a significant project that can make a world of difference in your home's aesthetics, energy efficiency, and overall comfort. One popular window upgrade is replacing casement windows with double hung windows. In this blog post, we'll dive into the benefits of making this switch and provide a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process.

Why Replace Casement Windows with Double Hung Windows?

Casement windows, which are hinged at the side and open outward, have been a popular choice for homeowners due to their unobstructed views and ease of operation. However, double hung windows offer several advantages that make them an attractive alternative:

1. Versatility:Double hung windows have two operable sashes, allowing you to open both the top and bottom sections for increased airflow and ventilation. This feature is especially useful in rooms where you want to control the amount of fresh air coming in.

2. Energy Efficiency:Double hung windows typically have a tighter seal than casement windows, which can help reduce drafts and improve your home's energy efficiency. Additionally, many newer double hung windows come with energy-saving features such as low-E glass and argon gas-filled panes.

3. Ease of Cleaning:Double hung windows are designed to tilt inward, making it easy to clean both the interior and exterior surfaces without needing a ladder or specialized equipment.

4. Aesthetics:For many homeowners, the classic look of double hung windows is more visually appealing than casement windows. Double hung windows also offer a wider variety of design options, including different grid patterns and hardware finishes.

Planning Your Window Replacement Project

Before you start replacing your casement windows with double hung windows, it's essential to plan the project carefully. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Measure Your Windows:Accurate measurements are crucial to ensure your new double hung windows fit properly. Measure the width and height of each casement window you plan to replace, and make note of any irregularities or unique features.

2. Choose Your Window Style:Double hung windows come in a variety of styles, materials, and finishes. Consider factors such as your home's architectural style, your personal preferences, and your budget when selecting the perfect windows for your project.

3. Find a Reputable Installer:Replacing windows is a complex task that requires specialized skills and tools. It's important to hire a professional window installer with experience in replacing casement windows with double hung windows to ensure the job is done correctly and efficiently.

Step-by-Step Guide to Replacing Casement Windows with Double Hung Windows

Once you've planned your project and selected your new double hung windows, it's time to begin the installation process. Here's a general overview of the steps involved:

1. Remove the Old Casement Window:Start by carefully removing the casement window's sash and hardware. This may involve unscrewing hinges, removing the crank mechanism, and detaching any locks or latches.

2. Prepare the Opening:Inspect the window opening for any damage, such as rot or moisture issues, and address these problems before proceeding. Clean the opening thoroughly and make any necessary repairs to the framing or sill.

3. Install the New Double Hung Window:Carefully lift the new double hung window into place, ensuring it is level and centered in the opening. Secure the window using the provided installation hardware, making sure it is tightly sealed to prevent drafts or water infiltration.

4. Insulate and Seal the Window:Once the window is securely installed, apply insulation around the perimeter of the window to fill any gaps and improve energy efficiency. Use caulk or weatherstripping to create a tight seal between the window and the surrounding frame.

5. Finish the Interior and Exterior:Complete the window installation by adding any necessary interior and exterior trim, as well as any additional hardware or accessories. This may include painting or staining the trim, installing window locks, or adding decorative grids.

With your casement windows successfully replaced with double hung windows, you can now enjoy the many benefits of this upgrade. INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
