Assessing the Damage: Identifying Common Issues with Casement Windows

Before diving into the restoration process, it's essential to assess the damage and identify any issues that need to be addressed. Common problems with casement windows include:

1. Rotting wood: Wooden casement windows can be susceptible to rot, particularly in areas where moisture tends to accumulate. Inspect the window frame and sash for signs of decay, such as soft or discolored wood.

2. Broken or damaged hardware: Over time, the hardware on casement windows, such as the crank, hinges, and locks, can become worn or damaged. This can make it difficult to open and close the window, as well as compromise its security.

3. Drafts and air leaks: Older casement windows may not seal properly, leading to drafts and air leaks. This can result in increased energy costs, as well as reduced comfort in the home.

4. Cracked or broken glass: Accidents happen, and sometimes the glass in casement windows can become cracked or broken. This not only detracts from the window's appearance but can also pose a safety hazard.

Repairing and Restoring Casement Windows: A Step-by-Step Guide

Once you've identified the issues with your casement windows, it's time to start the repair and restoration process. Follow these steps to bring your windows back to life:

1. Remove the window: Carefully remove the window from its frame, taking care not to damage the surrounding wall or trim. This may require the use of a pry bar, screwdriver, or utility knife to loosen any caulk or paint that may be holding the window in place.

2. Repair the frame: If the frame is showing signs of rot or damage, it's essential to address these issues before reinstalling the window. This may involve removing and replacing damaged sections of wood, filling in gaps with wood filler, or treating the wood with a protective sealant to prevent future decay.

3. Replace or repair hardware: If the hardware on your casement window is damaged or worn, it's crucial to replace or repair it to ensure proper functionality. This may involve replacing the entire crank mechanism, fixing broken hinges, or installing new locks.

4. Seal gaps and air leaks: To improve energy efficiency and prevent drafts, it's essential to seal any gaps or air leaks around the casement window. This can be done using weatherstripping, caulk, or expanding foam insulation, depending on the size and location of the gaps.

5. Replace or repair glass: If the glass in your casement window is cracked or broken, it's important to replace it to maintain the window's appearance and safety. This may involve carefully removing the old glass, cleaning the window sash, and installing a new pane of glass using glazier's points and putty.

6. Refinish the window: Once all repairs have been made, it's time to refinish the window to restore its original beauty. This may involve sanding down the wood, applying a fresh coat of paint or stain, and sealing the wood with a protective clear coat.

7. Reinstall the window: Carefully reinstall the casement window in its frame, ensuring that it is properly aligned and securely fastened. Test the window's functionality to ensure that it opens and closes smoothly and that all hardware is functioning correctly.

Upgrading Your Casement Windows: Modern Solutions for Improved Performance

In addition to repairing and restoring your casement windows, you may also want to consider upgrading them to improve their performance. Some modern solutions that can enhance the functionality and energy efficiency of your casement windows include:

1. Installing energy-efficient glass: Replacing the glass in your casement windows with energy-efficient options, such as double- or triple-pane glass, can significantly improve their insulation and reduce energy costs.

2. Adding window film: Window film can be applied to the glass in your casement windows to improve their energy efficiency, reduce glare, and protect against UV damage.

3. Installing retractable screens: Retractable screens can be added to casement windows to provide insect protection and improved ventilation without compromising the window's appearance.

By following this comprehensive guide to salvaging casement windows, you can restore the charm and functionality of these timeless architectural features. With a bit of effort and attention to detail, your casement windows will once again be a beautiful and practical addition to your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests.
