Old casement windows have a charm and character that is difficult to replicate in modern homes. These windows, which were popular in the early 20th century, are known for their unique design and functionality. However, as time goes on, these windows can experience wear and tear, and their screens can become damaged or lost. In this blog post, we will explore the world of custom-made replacement screens for old casement windows, ensuring that your home maintains its vintage appeal while also enjoying the benefits of modern window technology.
Casement windows, which are hinged at the side and open outward, have been a popular choice for homeowners for centuries. They offer excellent ventilation and unobstructed views, making them a great option for those who appreciate fresh air and natural light. The design of old casement windows is often quite intricate, featuring beautiful woodwork and hardware that can add a touch of elegance to any home.
Unfortunately, as these windows age, they can become less efficient and more prone to damage. One common issue that homeowners face is the deterioration of the window screens. Over time, screens can develop holes or tears, or they may simply become lost or damaged beyond repair. This can be a significant problem, as it allows insects and debris to enter the home when the windows are open.
If you're in need of replacement screens for your old casement windows, you may be tempted to purchase off-the-shelf options from your local hardware store. However, these screens are often ill-fitting and may not provide the same level of protection and aesthetics as a custom-made option.
By choosing custom-made replacement screens, you can ensure that your new screens will fit perfectly and match the style of your existing windows. This is especially important when it comes to old casement windows, as their unique design and dimensions may not be compatible with standard screen sizes.
In addition to providing a better fit, custom-made screens also offer a higher level of quality and durability. These screens are typically made from stronger materials, such as aluminum or fiberglass, which can withstand the test of time and resist damage from the elements.
When it comes to selecting the right material for your custom-made replacement screens, there are several options to consider. Aluminum and fiberglass are two of the most popular choices, each offering its own set of benefits.
Aluminum screens are known for their durability and strength, making them an excellent option for homeowners who want a long-lasting solution. They are also resistant to rust and corrosion, ensuring that they will maintain their appearance over time. However, aluminum screens can be more expensive than other options and may be prone to denting.
Fiberglass screens, on the other hand, are lightweight and more affordable than aluminum. They are also resistant to corrosion and can withstand exposure to the elements. However, they may not be as strong as aluminum screens and could be more susceptible to damage from impacts or pets.
Ultimately, the choice between aluminum and fiberglass screens will come down to your personal preferences and budget. Both options can provide a high-quality, custom-made solution for your old casement windows.
Once you've decided on the material for your replacement screens, it's time to work with a professional to create the perfect screens for your old casement windows. A window specialist or screen fabricator can help you take accurate measurements of your existing windows and create screens that will fit seamlessly into your window frames.
When working with a professional, be sure to discuss any specific design elements or features that you'd like to incorporate into your new screens. For example, you may want to match the color of your screens to the existing window frames or choose a particular type of mesh that will provide added protection against insects or debris.
Custom-made replacement screens for old casement windows are an excellent investment for homeowners who want to maintain the charm and character of their vintage windows while also enjoying the benefits of modern window technology. By choosing the right material and working with a professional to create your custom screens, you can ensure that your home remains protected and comfortable for years to come. This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
