Right Hand vs Left Hand Casement Windows: Understanding the Difference and Choosing the Best Option for Your Home

When it comes to casement windows, there are two main types to consider: right hand and left hand. These terms refer to the direction in which the window opens. Understanding the difference between these two options is essential for homeowners looking to make an informed decision about their window replacement or installation project. In this blog post, we will explore the key differences between right hand and left hand casement windows, discuss the factors to consider when choosing between the two, and provide some tips on how to make the best decision for your home.

What Are Right Hand and Left Hand Casement Windows?

A casement window is a type of window that is hinged on one side and swings open either inward or outward. Right hand and left hand casement windows refer to the side on which the window is hinged and the direction in which it opens. A right hand casement window is hinged on the right side and opens to the left, while a left hand casement window is hinged on the left side and opens to the right.

Key Differences Between Right Hand and Left Hand Casement Windows

There are several differences between right hand and left hand casement windows that homeowners should be aware of when making their decision. Some of the key differences include:

1. Opening Direction: As mentioned earlier, the primary difference between right hand and left hand casement windows is the direction in which they open. This can impact the overall functionality and accessibility of the window, as well as the aesthetics of your home's exterior.

2. Hardware: The hardware for right hand and left hand casement windows is typically different, as the handles and locks are designed to accommodate the specific opening direction of the window. This means that you may need to purchase different hardware if you decide to switch from one type of casement window to the other.

3. Ventilation and Airflow: The direction in which a casement window opens can affect the amount of ventilation and airflow it provides. For example, a right hand casement window that opens to the left may provide better airflow in a room with a predominantly western exposure, while a left hand casement window that opens to the right may be more suitable for a room with a predominantly eastern exposure.

4. Ease of Cleaning: Depending on the location and accessibility of your casement windows, the opening direction can impact how easy they are to clean. For example, if a window is located near a corner or an obstruction, a right hand casement window may be easier to clean from the outside than a left hand casement window, or vice versa.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Between Right Hand and Left Hand Casement Windows

When deciding between right hand and left hand casement windows, there are several factors to consider, including:

1. Room Layout and Function: Consider the layout and function of the room in which the casement window will be installed. Think about how the window's opening direction will impact furniture placement, accessibility, and overall room flow.

2. Aesthetics: Take into account the overall look and design of your home's exterior. Depending on your home's architectural style and the placement of other windows, one type of casement window may be more visually appealing than the other.

3. Ventilation and Airflow Needs: Evaluate the ventilation and airflow needs of the room in which the casement window will be installed. Consider the direction of prevailing winds and the room's exposure to sunlight to determine which type of casement window will provide the best ventilation and airflow.

4. Ease of Cleaning: Assess the location and accessibility of the casement window and consider which type will be easier to clean from the outside.

Tips for Making the Best Decision for Your Home

To make the best decision between right hand and left hand casement windows for your home, consider the following tips:

1. Consult with a Professional: Speak with a window installation professional or an architect to get expert advice on which type of casement window is best suited for your home's specific needs and design.

2. Visit Showrooms: Visit window showrooms to see and operate both right hand and left hand casement windows in person. This can help you get a better sense of the differences between the two and make a more informed decision.

3. Take Your Time: Don't rush the decision-making process. Take the time to carefully consider all factors and weigh the pros and cons of each type of casement window before making your final decision.

By understanding the differences between right hand and left hand casement windows and considering the various factors involved in choosing between the two, you can make the best decision for your home and enjoy the many benefits of casement windows for years to come.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance.
