The Ingenious Design of Casement Windows: A Comprehensive Guide to How They Open

Casement windows have been a popular choice for homeowners for centuries, thanks to their unique design and functionality. These windows are hinged on one side and open outward like a door, providing excellent ventilation and unobstructed views. In this blog post, we will dive deep into the world of casement windows, exploring their history, design, and how they open, all while showcasing different styles to inspire your next home improvement project.

A Brief History of Casement Windows

Casement windows date back to medieval times when they were commonly found in European castles and manor houses. They were initially made of wood and had a simple latch mechanism for opening and closing. The advent of glassmaking in the 16th century led to the incorporation of glass panes in casement windows, making them more practical and visually appealing.

Over the years, casement windows have evolved to include various materials, designs, and opening mechanisms, making them a versatile and stylish option for modern homes.

The Anatomy of a Casement Window

To better understand how casement windows open, we must first familiarize ourselves with their components. A typical casement window consists of the following parts:

1. Frame: The outer structure that holds the window in place and supports the sash.

2. Sash: The movable part of the window that holds the glass panes and opens outward.

3. Hinges: The pivot points on the side of the frame that allow the sash to swing open.

4. Latch: The locking mechanism that secures the window when closed and releases it when opened.

5. Operator: The handle or crank that controls the opening and closing of the window.

How Casement Windows Open

Now that we have a basic understanding of the components, let's delve into the process of how casement windows open:

1. Unlock the Latch: The first step in opening a casement window is to release the latch. This can be done by turning the handle or using a key, depending on the type of lock installed.

2. Turn the Operator: Once the latch is unlocked, the operator comes into play. By turning the handle or cranking the lever, the sash is pushed outward, causing the window to open.

3. Adjust the Opening: Casement windows can be opened to varying degrees, allowing you to control the amount of ventilation and natural light entering your home. Simply turn the operator until the desired opening is achieved.

4. Secure the Window: Some casement windows come with a stay, a metal bar that holds the window open at a specific angle. This prevents the window from slamming shut due to wind or other external factors.

Different Styles of Casement Windows

Casement windows come in a variety of styles to suit different architectural designs and personal preferences. Some popular styles include:

1. Traditional Casement Windows: These windows feature a single sash with multiple glass panes, often separated by wooden or metal bars called muntins. They are commonly found in older homes and historical buildings.

2. French Casement Windows: Also known as double casement windows, these consist of two sashes that open from the center, creating a wide, unobstructed opening. They are ideal for rooms with a picturesque view or those requiring easy access to outdoor spaces.

3. Push-Out Casement Windows: Instead of a crank or handle, these windows open by simply pushing the sash outward. They offer a sleek and modern appearance, with hidden hinges and minimal hardware.

4. Awning Casement Windows: Hinged at the top, these windows open outward from the bottom, creating an awning effect. They are perfect for providing ventilation during light rain, as the open sash prevents water from entering your home.

5. Round-Top Casement Windows: Featuring a curved top, these windows add an elegant touch to any room. They can be used as standalone windows or combined with rectangular casements to create a stunning focal point.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
