Round casement windows have been a popular architectural element for centuries, gracing the facades of homes, churches, and other buildings with their unique charm and elegance. These windows not only provide a stunning visual appeal but also offer practical benefits that make them a great choice for homeowners and architects alike. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of round casement windows, exploring their history, design, and functionality, as well as offering some inspiration for incorporating them into your own space.
Round casement windows, also known as "rose windows" or "oculus windows," can be traced back to ancient Roman architecture. These circular openings were often used in temples and other public buildings, serving both as a source of light and a decorative element. The rose window, a variation of the round casement window, became a prominent feature in Gothic architecture, particularly in the grand cathedrals of Europe. The intricate stained glass designs of these rose windows are still admired for their beauty and craftsmanship today.
Over the years, round casement windows have evolved in design and function, but their timeless appeal has remained constant. Today, they continue to be a popular choice for homeowners and architects seeking to add a touch of elegance and character to their buildings.
At their core, round casement windows are hinged windows that open and close like a door, usually operated by a crank or lever. This design allows for maximum ventilation, as the entire window can be opened to let in fresh air. The circular shape of the window also lends itself well to unique design possibilities, from simple and understated to ornate and eye-catching.
One of the most significant benefits of round casement windows is their ability to provide natural light. The circular shape allows for light to enter from multiple angles, creating a bright and inviting atmosphere within the space. Additionally, the window's design can be customized to include decorative glass, muntins, or other elements to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the window and the surrounding architecture.
Round casement windows can be made from various materials, including wood, aluminum, and vinyl, each offering its own set of advantages. Wood windows, for example, provide a classic and warm appearance, while aluminum and vinyl options offer increased durability and low maintenance.
The versatility of round casement windows makes them suitable for a wide range of architectural styles and building types. Here are some ideas for incorporating these windows into your space:
1. Create a focal point:A round casement window can serve as a striking focal point in any room, drawing the eye and adding visual interest. Consider placing the window in a prominent location, such as above a fireplace or in the center of a wall.
2. Enhance a view:Round casement windows can be used to frame and accentuate a beautiful view, whether it be a lush garden, a city skyline, or a serene landscape. Position the window to capture the best angle of the view and let the scenery become a part of your interior design.
3. Add architectural interest:Use round casement windows to break up the monotony of a plain wall or to add character to a building's exterior. The windows can be installed individually or in groups to create a unique pattern or design.
4. Illuminate a dark space:If you have a room that lacks natural light, consider adding a round casement window to brighten up the space. The window will allow light to enter from multiple angles, making the room feel more open and inviting.
5. Incorporate stained glass:For a truly stunning effect, consider incorporating stained glass into your round casement window design. This can add a touch of color and artistry to your space, while still providing the functional benefits of a casement window.
In conclusion, round casement windows offer a unique combination of beauty and functionality, making them a valuable addition to any building or interior design. With their rich history, versatile design options, and practical benefits, these windows are sure to remain a popular choice for years to come.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
