Casement windows have been a popular choice for homeowners for centuries. Their simple design, ease of use, and timeless appeal have made them a staple in many homes. In this blog post, we will explore the various aspects of two casement windows side by side, comparing their features, benefits, and overall charm. With over 1000 words, we will dive deep into the world of casement windows, providing you with valuable insights and information to help you make the best choice for your home.

The History of Casement Windows

Casement windows date back to the medieval era, where they were primarily used in European castles and manor houses. They were initially made of wood and designed with a single pane of glass, which was hinged on one side and opened outwards. Over time, casement windows have evolved to include various materials, such as vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass, and are now available in a range of styles and sizes.

The Two Casement Windows: Side by Side

For our side-by-side comparison, we will be looking at two popular casement window styles: the traditional casement window and the French casement window.

Traditional Casement Window

The traditional casement window is characterized by its single sash, which is hinged on one side and opens outward. This design allows for excellent ventilation and easy cleaning, as the entire window can be opened to allow fresh air to flow through the room. Traditional casement windows can be customized with various materials, colors, and hardware options, making them a versatile choice for any home.

French Casement Window

The French casement window, also known as a double casement window, features two sashes that are hinged on opposite sides and open outward from the center. This design creates an unobstructed view when both sashes are open, providing a sense of elegance and sophistication. French casement windows are often used in larger openings or as a focal point in a room, adding a touch of European charm to any space.

Comparing the Features and Benefits

Now that we have introduced the two casement window styles, let's compare their features and benefits side by side.

Ventilation

Both traditional and French casement windows offer excellent ventilation, as they can be fully opened to allow fresh air to flow through the room. However, French casement windows may provide slightly better ventilation due to their double sash design, which creates a larger opening for air to pass through.

Aesthetics

When it comes to aesthetics, both traditional and French casement windows offer a timeless charm that can complement any home. Traditional casement windows provide a classic look, while French casement windows add a touch of European elegance. The choice between the two will ultimately depend on your personal taste and the style of your home.

Maintenance

In terms of maintenance, both traditional and French casement windows are relatively easy to clean, as they can be opened fully to access the exterior glass. However, French casement windows may require slightly more maintenance due to their double sash design, which can create more crevices and areas for dirt to accumulate.

Energy Efficiency

Casement windows are known for their energy efficiency, as their tight seal helps to prevent drafts and air leakage. Both traditional and French casement windows offer similar levels of energy efficiency, with the main difference being the type of glass and materials used. To maximize energy efficiency, look for casement windows with double or triple-pane glass and high-quality insulation.

Security

Casement windows are generally considered to be more secure than other window types, as their locking mechanism is embedded within the frame. Both traditional and French casement windows offer similar levels of security, with the main difference being the number of locks and the quality of the hardware used.

Choosing the Right Casement Window for Your Home

When it comes to choosing the right casement window for your home, there are several factors to consider, such as the overall style of your home, the size of the window opening, and your personal preferences. Both traditional and French casement windows offer a timeless charm and a range of benefits, making them an excellent choice for any home. By carefully considering your needs and preferences, you can select the perfect casement window to enhance your home's beauty and functionality.

In this blog post, we have explored the world of casement windows, comparing the features and benefits of traditional and French casement windows side by side. We hope that this information has provided you with valuable insights and will help you make the best choice for your home.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Custom Designed Grilles and Transom

Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.

Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
