The Ultimate Guide to Andersen Casement Window Repair

Homeowners often seek the perfect balance between aesthetics, functionality, and energy efficiency when choosing windows for their homes. Andersen casement windows have long been a popular choice because they offer all three. However, like any other window, they may require repair over time. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the process of diagnosing and repairing common issues with Andersen casement windows.

Identifying Common Casement Window Issues

Before diving into the repair process, it's essential to identify the specific issue you're facing. Common problems with casement windows include:

1. Difficulty in opening or closing the window

2. Cracked or broken glass

3. Damaged or malfunctioning hardware

4. Worn-out weatherstripping

5. Air or water leaks

Repairing Difficulty in Opening or Closing the Window

If your Andersen casement window is challenging to open or close, the most likely culprit is a damaged or misaligned operator mechanism. To fix this issue, follow these steps:

1. Remove the window's handle by loosening the set screw found at the base of the handle.

2. Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the operator cover, exposing the operator mechanism.

3. Inspect the gears and arms for any visible damage or misalignment. If necessary, replace the operator mechanism with a new one from Andersen.

4. Apply a light layer of lubricant to the gears and arms to ensure smooth operation.

5. Reassemble the operator cover and handle, then test the window's functionality.

Repairing Cracked or Broken Glass

Cracked or broken glass in your Andersen casement window not only affects its appearance but also its energy efficiency. To replace the glass, follow these steps:

1. Carefully remove the broken glass, wearing gloves to protect your hands.

2. Measure the dimensions of the window opening and order a replacement glass pane from Andersen or a local glass supplier.

3. Apply a bead of glazing compound around the window opening, ensuring even coverage.

4. Carefully place the new glass pane into the opening, pressing gently to ensure it adheres to the glazing compound.

5. Use glazing points to secure the glass in place, spacing them evenly around the perimeter.

6. Apply a final layer of glazing compound around the edges of the glass pane, smoothing it with a putty knife for a clean finish.

Repairing Damaged or Malfunctioning Hardware

Andersen casement window hardware, such as locks and hinges, can wear out or become damaged over time. To replace these components, follow these steps:

1. Identify the specific hardware that needs replacement and order the appropriate parts from Andersen.

2. Remove the damaged hardware by unscrewing it from the window frame and sash.

3. Install the new hardware, ensuring it is securely fastened and properly aligned.

4. Test the window's functionality to ensure the new hardware operates correctly.

Replacing Worn-Out Weatherstripping

Weatherstripping around your Andersen casement window helps keep drafts and moisture out, maintaining your home's energy efficiency. If it becomes worn or damaged, follow these steps to replace it:

1. Remove the old weatherstripping by gently pulling it away from the window frame and sash.

2. Measure the length of the window's perimeter and cut the new weatherstripping to size.

3. Apply adhesive to the back of the new weatherstripping, following the manufacturer's instructions.

4. Press the new weatherstripping firmly into place along the window's perimeter, ensuring a snug fit.

5. Test the window's functionality to ensure the new weatherstripping effectively seals against drafts and moisture.

Sealing Air or Water Leaks

If you notice air or water leaking around your Andersen casement window, the issue may be with the window's sealant. To address this problem, follow these steps:

1. Use a utility knife to carefully remove the old sealant from around the window's perimeter.

2. Clean the area thoroughly, ensuring it is free of debris and old sealant residue.

3. Apply a high-quality exterior-grade sealant around the window's perimeter, ensuring even coverage and a watertight seal.

4. Smooth the sealant with a putty knife or your finger, creating a clean, professional finish.

By following this ultimate guide to Andersen casement window repair, you can ensure your windows continue to provide the perfect balance of aesthetics, functionality, and energy efficiency for years to come. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues will keep your windows in top condition, protecting your home and enhancing its curb appeal.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
