With over 1000 words of valuable information, you'll become an expert on casement window hinge arms in no time.

Types of Casement Window Hinge Arms

There are several types of hinge arms available for casement windows, each with its own unique features and benefits. Here, we will discuss the most common types of hinge arms and their applications.

Standard Hinge Arms

Standard hinge arms are the most common type of hinge arm used in casement windows. They are typically made of stainless steel or brass and are designed to provide a smooth and reliable operation. These hinge arms are suitable for most residential applications and are available in various lengths and sizes to accommodate different window sizes.

Egress Hinge Arms

Egress hinge arms are specifically designed for windows that serve as emergency exits. These hinge arms allow the window to open to a full 90-degree angle, providing a clear and unobstructed escape route in case of an emergency. Egress hinge arms are typically required by building codes for bedrooms and other designated escape routes.

Friction Hinge Arms

Friction hinge arms are designed to hold the window open at any angle without the need for a separate window stay. These hinge arms use a friction mechanism that can be adjusted to provide the desired level of resistance. Friction hinge arms are ideal for situations where the window needs to remain open at a specific angle, such as in coastal areas with strong winds.

Concealed Hinge Arms

Concealed hinge arms are designed to be hidden from view when the window is closed, providing a sleek and modern appearance. These hinge arms are often used in high-end residential and commercial applications where aesthetics are a priority. Concealed hinge arms can be more challenging to install and maintain due to their hidden nature.

Casement Window Hinge Arm Maintenance

Proper maintenance of your casement window hinge arms is essential for ensuring smooth operation and prolonging their lifespan. Here are some tips on how to maintain your hinge arms:

1. Regularly clean the hinge arms– Dust and debris can accumulate on the hinge arms and affect their performance. Use a soft cloth and mild soapy water to clean the hinge arms, being careful not to scratch the surface.

2. Lubricate the hinge arms– Lubricating the hinge arms will reduce friction and ensure smooth operation. Apply a silicone-based lubricant to the hinge arms every six months, or more frequently if the window is exposed to harsh environmental conditions.

3. Check for loose or damaged screws– Loose or damaged screws can cause the hinge arms to become misaligned, leading to poor performance and potential damage. Tighten any loose screws and replace any damaged ones.

4. Inspect the hinge arms for signs of wear or damage– Regularly inspect the hinge arms for signs of wear or damage, such as cracks, rust, or excessive wear on the friction mechanism. If you notice any issues, consult a professional for advice on whether the hinge arms need to be replaced.

When to Replace Casement Window Hinge Arms

There are several signs that your casement window hinge arms may need to be replaced. These include:

Difficulty opening or closing the window– If your casement window becomes difficult to open or close, it could be due to worn or damaged hinge arms.

Window does not stay open– If your window no longer stays open at the desired angle, it may be due to worn or damaged friction hinge arms.

Visible signs of wear or damage– As mentioned earlier, inspect your hinge arms regularly for signs of wear or damage. If you notice any issues, it may be time to replace the hinge arms.

Broken hinge arm– If a hinge arm is broken, it will need to be replaced immediately to ensure the safe and proper operation of your casement window.

When replacing casement window hinge arms, it is essential to choose the correct type and size for your specific window. Consult a professional if you are unsure of which hinge arms to purchase. Additionally, proper installation is crucial for ensuring the longevity and performance of your new hinge arms. If you are not confident in your ability to install the hinge arms correctly, it is recommended to hire a professional to complete the task.

In conclusion, understanding the different types of casement window hinge arms, maintaining them properly, and knowing when to replace them are essential aspects of owning casement windows. With this guide, you are now equipped with the knowledge to keep your casement windows functioning smoothly and looking their best for years to come.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
