By the end of this article, you'll be well-equipped to make an informed decision on whether hurricane impact casement windows are the right choice for your home.

What are Hurricane Impact Casement Windows?

Hurricane impact casement windows are specially designed windows that can withstand the extreme pressure and flying debris associated with hurricanes. They feature a single sash that is hinged on one side and swings outward, allowing for optimal ventilation and unobstructed views. These windows are made with impact-resistant glass and reinforced frames, providing an added layer of protection for your home.

Benefits of Hurricane Impact Casement Windows

There are several reasons why homeowners in hurricane-prone areas choose to install impact casement windows. Some of the main benefits include:

1. Protection from Storm Damage: The primary reason to install hurricane impact casement windows is to protect your home from the devastating effects of hurricanes. These windows are designed to withstand high winds, flying debris, and even the pressure changes caused by hurricanes. This can help prevent damage to your home's structure and protect your family and belongings.

2. Energy Efficiency: Impact casement windows are known for their excellent energy efficiency. The tight seal created when the window is closed helps keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This can lead to significant savings on your energy bills.

3. Noise Reduction: The thick, impact-resistant glass used in these windows can also help reduce outside noise, making your home a more peaceful and quiet space.

4. Improved Security: The same features that make impact casement windows resistant to hurricanes also make them more difficult to break into. This added security can provide peace of mind and may even lower your insurance premiums.

5. Aesthetic Appeal: Hurricane impact casement windows come in a wide variety of styles, colors, and finishes, allowing you to enhance the appearance of your home while also providing essential protection.

How Hurricane Impact Casement Windows Work

The key to the effectiveness of hurricane impact casement windows is their unique construction. These windows are made with two layers of impact-resistant glass, separated by a layer of clear polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) interlayer. This sandwiched construction helps the window absorb the energy from flying debris and high winds, preventing the glass from shattering and protecting your home from damage.

The frames of these windows are also reinforced with materials such as aluminum, vinyl, or wood, which are designed to withstand the pressure of hurricane-force winds. Additionally, the hardware used in casement windows, such as hinges and locking mechanisms, are also built to provide added strength and security.

Design Options for Hurricane Impact Casement Windows

One of the great things about impact casement windows is the wide variety of design options available. You can choose from various frame materials, colors, and finishes to match the style of your home. Here are some of the most popular choices:

1. Aluminum Frames: Aluminum is a popular choice for impact casement windows due to its strength, durability, and resistance to corrosion. These frames come in a variety of colors and finishes, including wood grain options that mimic the appearance of wood without the maintenance requirements.

2. Vinyl Frames: Vinyl frames are another popular choice for their energy efficiency, low maintenance, and affordability. They are available in a range of colors and finishes, allowing you to customize the look of your windows.

3. Wood Frames: For a more traditional look, wood frames are available for impact casement windows. These frames offer a classic appearance but may require more maintenance than aluminum or vinyl options.

4. Customization: In addition to frame materials, you can also customize the appearance of your impact casement windows with features such as decorative glass, grids, and hardware options. This allows you to create a unique look that complements the style of your home.

As you can see, hurricane impact casement windows offer a variety of benefits, from protection against storm damage to improved energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal. By understanding how these windows work and exploring the design options available, you can make the best choice for your home and enjoy peace of mind knowing you're well-protected during hurricane season.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
