The Ultimate Guide to Installing a Casement Window Air Conditioner

Introduction

As the summer heat approaches, many homeowners are looking for ways to keep their homes cool and comfortable. One popular option is to install a casement window air conditioner. Casement window air conditioners are designed to fit into casement windows, which are windows that open vertically with a crank or lever. This type of air conditioner is an excellent choice for those who want to save space and avoid the hassle of installing a central air conditioning system. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the process of selecting and installing a casement window air conditioner in your home.

Choosing the Right Casement Window Air Conditioner

Before you can install a casement window air conditioner, you need to choose the right unit for your needs. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a casement window air conditioner:

1. Size: Measure the dimensions of your casement window to ensure that the air conditioner you choose will fit properly. Most casement window air conditioners are designed to fit windows with a width of 15-16 inches and a height of 20-21 inches.

2. Cooling Capacity: The cooling capacity of an air conditioner is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs). To determine the appropriate cooling capacity for your space, consider the size of the room you want to cool. A general rule of thumb is to choose an air conditioner with 20 BTUs per square foot of living space.

3. Energy Efficiency: Look for a casement window air conditioner with a high Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) to save on energy costs. The EER is calculated by dividing the cooling capacity in BTUs by the unit's energy consumption in watt-hours. A higher EER indicates a more energy-efficient unit.

4. Features: Consider the features you want in a casement window air conditioner, such as a programmable thermostat, remote control, or energy-saving modes.

Preparing for Installation

Before you begin the installation process, gather the necessary tools and materials. You will need:

A casement window air conditioner

A support bracket designed for casement window installations

A power drill and drill bits

A level

A tape measure

A pencil

A screwdriver

Weatherstripping or foam insulation

Step-by-Step Installation Guide

Follow these steps to install your casement window air conditioner:

1. Install the Support Bracket: Attach the support bracket to the window sill according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a level to ensure that the bracket is straight, and secure it with screws.

2. Prepare the Window: Open the casement window and remove the screen, if necessary. Measure the width and height of the window opening to determine if any modifications are needed to accommodate the air conditioner.

3. Install the Air Conditioner: Carefully lift the air conditioner and place it onto the support bracket. Slide the unit into the window opening, making sure that it is level and secure.

4. Secure the Unit: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to secure the air conditioner to the window frame. This may involve attaching brackets to the unit and window frame or using screws to fasten the unit in place.

5. Seal the Gaps: Use weatherstripping or foam insulation to seal any gaps between the air conditioner and the window frame. This will help prevent drafts and improve the unit's efficiency.

6. Connect the Power: Plug the air conditioner into an electrical outlet. If the unit has a power cord that is not long enough to reach the outlet, use an extension cord that is rated for the air conditioner's power requirements.

7. Test the Unit: Turn on the air conditioner and test its various functions to ensure that it is working properly.

Maintenance Tips

To keep your casement window air conditioner running efficiently, follow these maintenance tips:

Clean or replace the air filter regularly, according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Inspect the unit for any damage or signs of wear, and address any issues promptly.

Keep the area around the air conditioner free of debris and obstructions to ensure proper airflow.

Schedule a professional maintenance check-up at least once a year to keep your unit in optimal condition.

With proper installation and maintenance, a casement window air conditioner can provide years of comfort and energy savings. By following this guide, you can enjoy a cooler, more comfortable home during the hot summer months.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
