The Ultimate Guide to Push Out Casement Window Hardware

When it comes to windows, push out casement windows are a popular choice among homeowners. These windows offer a unique combination of style, functionality, and energy efficiency that sets them apart from other window types. However, the key to getting the most out of your push out casement windows lies in the hardware you choose. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the various aspects of push out casement window hardware, including types, materials, maintenance, and more. So, let's dive in and discover how you can make the most of your push out casement windows.

Understanding Push Out Casement Windows

Before we delve into the hardware aspect, it's essential to understand what push out casement windows are and how they function. These windows consist of a single or double-paneled sash that swings outward, either horizontally or vertically, using hinges mounted on the side. The push out mechanism allows for easy operation and creates a tight seal when closed, enhancing energy efficiency.

Types of Push Out Casement Window Hardware

The hardware you choose plays a crucial role in the overall performance and aesthetics of your push out casement windows. Some of the most common types of hardware include:

1. Hinges: These are the backbone of your push out casement window, allowing the sash to pivot and open. There are various hinge types to choose from, such as concealed hinges, pivot hinges, and butt hinges.

2. Operators: Operators control the opening and closing of the window sash. There are two main types of operators: manual and electric. Manual operators use a crank handle or lever to open and close the window, while electric operators use a motor and remote control.

3. Locks: Ensuring the security of your push out casement windows is paramount, and locks play a vital role in this. There are several lock options available, such as multi-point locks, sliding locks, and cam locks.

4. Handles: Handles are not only functional but also contribute to the overall aesthetics of your push out casement windows. They come in various styles, such as lever handles, T-handles, and fold-down handles.

5. Weatherstripping: This is an essential component of push out casement window hardware, as it helps to maintain a tight seal and prevent drafts. Weatherstripping can be made from various materials, such as vinyl, rubber, or foam.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Hardware

The material you choose for your push out casement window hardware will impact its durability, aesthetics, and maintenance requirements. Some popular materials include:

1. Brass: Brass is a popular choice for push out casement window hardware due to its durability, corrosion resistance, and classic appearance. It can be polished or given a patina finish to suit your preferences.

2. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is another durable and corrosion-resistant option that offers a sleek, modern look. It is low-maintenance and can be finished in various ways, such as brushed, polished, or matte.

3. Zinc: Zinc is a cost-effective option that offers decent durability and corrosion resistance. It is often used as a base material for plated finishes, such as chrome or nickel.

4. Aluminum: Aluminum hardware is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and low-maintenance. It can be anodized or powder-coated in various colors to match your window frame and overall decor.

Maintaining Your Push Out Casement Window Hardware

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and performance of your push out casement window hardware. Here are some tips to help you keep your hardware in top shape:

1. Regular Cleaning: Use a soft cloth and mild soap to clean your hardware regularly. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or materials, as they can scratch the surface and damage the finish.

2. Lubrication: Lubricate the moving parts of your hardware, such as hinges and operators, with a silicone-based lubricant at least once a year. This will ensure smooth operation and prevent wear and tear.

3. Tightening: Check and tighten any loose screws or bolts on your hardware periodically. Loose hardware can cause your windows to become misaligned and difficult to operate.

4. Weatherstripping Replacement: Over time, weatherstripping can become worn or damaged, leading to drafts and reduced energy efficiency. Replace any damaged weatherstripping to maintain a tight seal and optimal performance.

Customizing Your Push Out Casement Window Hardware

One of the great things about push out casement window hardware is the ability to customize it to suit your personal style and preferences. Here are some ways you can make your hardware unique:

1. Finishes: Choose a finish that complements your window frame and overall decor. Popular finishes include polished brass, brushed nickel, oil-rubbed bronze, and matte black.

2. Styles: Select hardware styles that match your home's architectural style, whether it's traditional, contemporary, or something in between.

3. Mix and Match: Don't be afraid to mix and match different hardware styles and finishes for a unique look. For example, you might choose a modern handle with a traditional lock or vice versa.

In summary, the right push out casement window hardware can significantly enhance the performance, aesthetics, and overall satisfaction with your windows. By understanding the various types of hardware, materials, and maintenance requirements, you can make informed decisions and get the most out of your push out casement windows. Don't forget to customize your hardware to create a unique look that reflects your personal style and complements your home's architecture.

INSPIRATION & SOLUTION

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.

Simulated Hung Window with Tilt & Turn Openings

The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.

Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?

Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.

Large Energy Efficient Fixed Windows

Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.

Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.

Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.

Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.

Custom Designed Thermal Break Aluminum Entry Door

Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.

With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
