Casement windows have been a popular choice for homeowners for centuries. With their simple yet elegant design, these windows add a touch of sophistication to any home. One of the most important aspects of casement windows is their latches, which not only serve a functional purpose but also contribute to the overall aesthetics of the window. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of vintage casement window latches, exploring their history, various designs, and how to choose the perfect one for your home.
Casement windows have been around since the medieval times, with the earliest examples dating back to the 14th century. Initially, these windows were made of wood and were held open with simple iron bars. As time progressed, the design evolved, and casement windows began to feature more intricate and decorative elements.
The casement window latch has also seen its fair share of evolution. Early latches were simple in design, often made of iron or brass, and served the primary purpose of keeping the window securely closed. As the centuries passed, latches became more ornate, reflecting the architectural styles of the time.
There are several vintage casement window latch designs that have stood the test of time and continue to be popular choices for homeowners today. Let's take a closer look at some of these timeless designs:
The classic iron latch is one of the earliest and most enduring casement window latch designs. Typically hand-forged, these latches feature a simple yet functional design. The latch consists of a handle and a hook, which is attached to the window frame. When the handle is turned, the hook engages with a catch on the frame, securing the window in place. This design is perfect for those who appreciate a rustic and authentic look.
The Victorian era was known for its elaborate and ornate designs, and this is evident in the sash latches from this time. These latches often feature intricate patterns and scrollwork, making them a beautiful addition to any casement window. Made from brass or cast iron, Victorian sash latches are not only visually appealing but also incredibly durable.
The Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 1930s brought about a new era of design, characterized by geometric shapes and bold lines. Art Deco casement window latches are no exception, featuring striking patterns and shapes that are both functional and visually captivating. These latches are often made from brass or chrome, adding a touch of glamour to any home.
The Craftsman style, which emerged in the early 20th century, focused on simplicity and functionality. Craftsman-style casement window latches reflect these principles, featuring clean lines and minimal ornamentation. Often made from brass or bronze, these latches are perfect for those who appreciate a more understated and timeless design.
When selecting a vintage casement window latch, there are several factors to consider. First and foremost, it's essential to choose a latch that complements the architectural style of your home. For example, a Victorian sash latch may not be the best choice for a modern, minimalist home, while a Craftsman-style latch may not suit a grand, ornate Victorian home.
Additionally, consider the material of the latch, as this can greatly impact its durability and appearance. Brass and bronze latches are known for their longevity and resistance to corrosion, while iron latches offer a more rustic and authentic look.
Finally, consider the functionality of the latch. While vintage casement window latches are undoubtedly beautiful, they must also serve their primary purpose of keeping your window securely closed. Ensure that the latch you choose is compatible with your window and can be easily operated by all members of your household.
Vintage casement window latches offer a unique blend of form and function, adding character and charm to any home. By exploring the various designs and styles available, you can find the perfect latch to complement your casement windows and enhance the overall aesthetics of your home. Whether you prefer the rustic simplicity of a classic iron latch or the intricate elegance of a Victorian sash latch, there is a vintage casement window latch out there to suit every taste and architectural style.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
