When it comes to windows, there are countless options available to homeowners. From traditional sash windows to modern tilt-and-turn designs, the choices can be overwhelming. However, one style that has stood the test of time and continues to be a popular choice for homeowners is the timber casement window. In this article, we will explore the beauty and benefits of custom timber casement windows and why they might be the perfect addition to your home.
Timber casement windows have a long and storied history, dating back to medieval times. They were a popular choice in Europe, particularly in England and France, due to their simplicity and practicality. The casement window's design consists of a single or double hinged sash that swings open on a horizontal axis, allowing for easy ventilation and cleaning.
As architectural styles evolved, so did the design of casement windows. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were often found in Arts and Crafts and Tudor-style homes. Today, timber casement windows are a popular choice for homeowners looking to add a touch of timeless elegance to their property.
There are numerous benefits to choosing custom timber casement windows for your home. Some of the most notable advantages include:
One of the most significant benefits of timber casement windows is their undeniable beauty. The natural wood grain and warm tones of timber can add a touch of sophistication and charm to any property. Additionally, custom timber casement windows can be designed to match the architectural style of your home, ensuring a cohesive look.
Timber is an excellent insulator, making timber casement windows an energy-efficient choice. They can help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing your reliance on heating and cooling systems and potentially lowering your energy bills.
When properly maintained, timber casement windows can last for decades. High-quality timber, such as oak or mahogany, is resistant to warping and rotting, ensuring your windows will stand the test of time.
Custom timber casement windows offer a level of customization that is unmatched by other window styles. You can choose the type of wood, finish, and hardware to create a window that is truly unique to your home.
While timber casement windows are known for their durability, they do require regular maintenance to ensure they remain in top condition. Some maintenance tips include:
Cleaning the windows regularly to remove dirt and debris.
Inspecting the windows for signs of damage or wear, such as cracks or rot.
Applying a fresh coat of paint or stain every few years to protect the wood from the elements.
Lubricating the hinges and locks to ensure smooth operation.
By following these simple maintenance tips, you can ensure your custom timber casement windows will continue to look beautiful and function flawlessly for years to come.
When selecting the timber for your custom casement windows, it's essential to consider factors such as durability, appearance, and cost. Some popular wood choices for timber casement windows include:
Oak:Known for its strength and durability, oak is a popular choice for casement windows. It has a beautiful grain pattern and can be stained or painted to suit your home's aesthetic.
Mahogany:This hardwood is known for its rich, dark color and resistance to rot and decay. Mahogany casement windows can add a touch of luxury to any property.
Pine:A more budget-friendly option, pine is a softwood that can be easily stained or painted. While not as durable as hardwoods like oak or mahogany, pine casement windows can still provide a beautiful and functional addition to your home.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.

In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. Multi-point lock systems provide not only the burglar-resistance but also a tighter compression seam, making the window keeps good energy-efficient performance. Together with Technoform Bautec’s insulation edge bond and sealant strips, these make up our products' top insulation and energy-saving performance.
