When it comes to choosing the perfect windows for your home, there's a myriad of options available in the market. However, one timeless classic that has stood the test of time is the traditional casement window. These windows have been a popular choice for centuries, thanks to their elegant design, superior ventilation, and ease of use. In this blog post, we'll dive deep into the world of casement windows and explore their various features, benefits, and design options to help you make an informed decision for your home.
Casement windows have been around for centuries, with their origins dating back to medieval Europe. They were initially made from wood and were installed in stone masonry buildings. The advent of leaded glass in the 16th century allowed for the incorporation of glass panes in casement windows, making them a popular choice for grand homes and castles.
Over the years, casement windows have evolved in terms of materials and design, but their basic structure and functionality have remained unchanged. Today, they are available in various materials like wood, vinyl, aluminum, and fiberglass, catering to different tastes and budgets.
A traditional casement window consists of a single or multiple hinged sashes that swing outward or inward, depending on the design. The sash is attached to the frame with one or more hinges, allowing the window to open like a door. The window can be opened and closed using a crank, lever, or handle, which is usually located at the bottom of the sash.
Some common casement window styles include:
Single Casement:Features a single sash that swings outward or inward.
Double Casement:Also known as French casement windows, these have two sashes that open from the center, providing an unobstructed view.
Push-Out Casement:Instead of a crank or lever, these windows have a handle that allows you to push the sash outward to open.
There are several reasons why homeowners continue to choose casement windows for their homes. Some of the key benefits include:
1. Superior Ventilation:Casement windows can be opened fully, allowing maximum airflow into your home. This makes them an excellent choice for rooms that require good ventilation, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
2. Energy Efficiency:Casement windows seal tightly when closed, preventing drafts and air leaks. This helps in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature and reducing energy consumption.
3. Enhanced Security:The locking mechanism of casement windows is embedded within the frame, making it difficult for intruders to pry them open. Additionally, you can install multi-point locking systems for added security.
4. Easy to Operate:The crank or lever mechanism makes it easy to open and close casement windows, even in hard-to-reach areas like above countertops or sinks.
5. Versatile Design Options:Casement windows can be customized to suit your home's architectural style, with options for different materials, colors, finishes, and hardware.
When selecting casement windows for your home, there are a few design elements to consider:
Window Size:The size of your casement window will depend on the room's requirements and the available wall space. Larger windows will allow more natural light and better ventilation but may require additional support.
Material:The choice of material will impact the window's durability, maintenance, and energy efficiency. Wood casement windows offer a classic, timeless look but may require more maintenance than vinyl, aluminum, or fiberglass options.
Glass Options:Double or triple-pane glass with low-emissivity (Low-E) coatings can improve the energy efficiency of your casement windows. You can also choose from various glass patterns and tints for added style and privacy.
Hardware:The hardware you choose for your casement windows, such as handles, hinges, and locks, can add a touch of elegance and style. Consider coordinating the hardware with other elements in your room for a cohesive look.
Grilles:Adding grilles to your casement windows can enhance their visual appeal and complement your home's architectural style. Grilles can be integrated between the glass panes or attached to the exterior of the window.
As you can see, traditional casement windows offer a versatile and stylish option for your home, combining aesthetics, functionality, and energy efficiency. With numerous design options and customizations available, you can create the perfect casement windows to suit your taste and complement your home's architecture. So, go ahead and explore the world of casement windows and give your home a timeless, classic touch.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
