How to Restain Your Front Door

Restaining your front door not only improves its appearance but also protects it from the elements. Whether your front door is made of wood, fiberglass, or steel, restaining it is a cost-effective way to give your home's exterior a fresh and updated look. In this blog post, we will guide you through the process of restaining your front door step-by-step.

Materials You Will Need

  • Orbital or palm sander
  • 120 and 220-grit sandpaper
  • Clean cloth
  • Stain stripper
  • Paintbrush or foam applicator
  • Wood stain
  • Varnish or polyurethane
  • Painter's tape
  • Drop cloth or old newspapers
  • Gloves and safety goggles

Step 1: Preparing the Door

Start by removing the door from its hinges and placing it on a stable work surface covered with a drop cloth or old newspapers. Use painter's tape to protect any hardware or glass surfaces.

Note: If your door is already stained, you'll need to remove the old stain before applying a new one. Apply a stain stripper following the manufacturer's instructions, and then use an orbital or palm sander with 120-grit sandpaper to remove the old stain.

Step 2: Sanding

Using an orbital or palm sander, sand the door with 220-grit sandpaper until the surface is smooth and free from any old stain, dirt, or imperfections. Make sure to sand in the direction of the wood grain.

Step 3: Cleaning

Wipe the door with a clean cloth to remove any dust or debris from sanding. Ensure that the surface is completely clean before applying the stain.

Step 4: Applying the Stain

Using a paintbrush or foam applicator, apply the wood stain evenly on the door following the grain of the wood. Start from the top and work your way down, making sure to cover all areas, including the edges and corners. Apply multiple thin coats for a deeper color, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.

Step 5: Applying the Varnish

Once the stain is dry, apply a clear varnish or polyurethane to protect the door from moisture and UV rays. It will also provide a glossy or satin finish, depending on your preference. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying times.

Step 6: Reinstalling the Door

After the varnish has dried, carefully reinstall the door back onto its hinges. Remove any painter's tape or protective coverings, and clean any glass surfaces if applicable.

Step 7: Maintenance Tips

To keep your front door looking its best, follow these simple maintenance tips:

  • Regularly wipe the door with a clean, damp cloth to remove dust and stains.
  • Inspect for any signs of wear or damage and make repairs as needed.
  • Apply a fresh coat of varnish every few years to maintain the door's protection.

Restaining your front door is a rewarding and relatively simple DIY project that can transform the look of your home's entrance. By following these steps and taking proper care of your front door, you'll enhance your home's curb appeal and durability for years to come.
