The first step is to find out what size picture frame you need. Most people think that a 12x39 inch frame will fit in a 12x40 inch opening, but that's not true. A 39 inch opening has a wider frame than 40 inches because there are two extra inches of space around the sides of the window frame. The width of your opening is measured from one side of your frame at the top to the other side at the bottom (not including the glass)
You'll also need some basic framing tools like a framing square and marking pencils to mark where each piece of wood goes
