The casement window is a traditional style of window created by folding the bottom half of the window into a box. The term comes from the Latin casamnetum, meaning “hanging door”. The casement frame consists of two pairs of vertical boards, each pair being hinged on one side and held in place with hinges on both sides. One board at each end has a triangular cut to allow light to pass through the window. Casement windows are often used for doors or as dormers in roofs
The first casements were made from vertical boards with hinges at either end, but this type of construction was soon superseded by glazing bars that could be inserted into holes in the top paneling. Casement windows can be fitted with an exterior sash that opens like a door, or an interior sash that opens with a crank handle or pull cord.[1]
