Casement windows are a popular choice for many homeowners due to their versatility, energy efficiency, and attractive design. However, one question that often arises is, "Are casement windows safe?" In this blog post, we will explore the security features of casement windows and discuss how they measure up against other window styles. By understanding the ins and outs of casement windows, you can make an informed decision about whether or not they are the right choice for your home.
Before delving into the safety aspects of casement windows, it's essential to understand what they are and how they function. Casement windows are hinged at the side and swing open outward, usually operated by a crank or lever. They are often found in pairs, with each window opening in the opposite direction. This window style is prevalent in older homes, but it has also become popular in modern designs due to its clean lines and ease of operation.
When it comes to safety, casement windows have several features that make them a secure option for homeowners. Some of these security features include:
One of the main security features of casement windows is the multi-point locking system. This system typically includes multiple locks along the vertical edge of the window, which engage when the window is closed and locked. The multi-point locking system makes it difficult for intruders to pry the window open, providing an added layer of security to your home.
Casement windows are often made of durable materials, such as wood, vinyl, or aluminum. These materials are not only strong and long-lasting but also resistant to forced entry. When combined with the multi-point locking system, the durable construction of casement windows makes them a secure option for homeowners.
Another security feature of casement windows is their limited opening width. Because they open outward and are hinged at the side, casement windows cannot be opened as wide as other window styles, such as double-hung or sliding windows. This limited opening width can make it difficult for intruders to enter your home through a casement window, especially if the window is located on an upper floor or in a hard-to-reach area.
Many casement windows come equipped with locking handles, which provide an additional layer of security. When the handle is locked, it prevents the window from being opened from the outside. This feature is particularly useful for windows that are located on the ground floor or in easily accessible areas of your home.
When comparing casement windows to other window styles in terms of safety, it's important to consider the specific security features of each window type. For example:
Double-hung windows, which slide up and down, can be more susceptible to forced entry if they are not equipped with strong locks and durable materials. Additionally, double-hung windows can be opened from the top or bottom, making them potentially easier to enter for an intruder.
Sliding windows, which slide horizontally, can also be vulnerable to forced entry if they do not have sturdy locks and reinforced materials. However, some sliding windows come with additional security features, such as secondary locking devices or window bars, which can improve their overall safety.
Awning windows, which are similar to casement windows but hinged at the top, also have limited opening widths and can be equipped with multi-point locking systems. This makes them a relatively secure option, similar to casement windows.
Ultimately, the security of any window style depends on the specific features it offers and the quality of its construction. Casement windows, with their multi-point locking systems, durable materials, and limited opening widths, can be a safe and secure choice for homeowners.
If you decide to install casement windows in your home, there are several steps you can take to enhance their security further:
1. Choose windows with strong, durable materials, such as reinforced vinyl or aluminum.
2. Opt for windows with a multi-point locking system and locking handles.
3. Install window security bars or grilles, especially on ground-floor windows or those in easily accessible areas.
4. Consider adding window alarms or sensors to your home security system.
5. Regularly inspect and maintain your windows to ensure they remain in good working order.
By taking these steps, you can enjoy the benefits of casement windows while ensuring that your home remains safe and secure. So, are casement windows safe? The answer is yes - as long as you choose high-quality windows and take the necessary precautions to enhance their security.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
