When it comes to choosing the perfect windows for your home, there are a plethora of options available on the market. Two of the most popular window styles are double hung windows and casement windows. Both offer unique benefits and features, making them suitable for different types of homes and architectural styles. In this blog post, we will delve into the details of double hung windows and casement windows, comparing their pros and cons, functionality, and aesthetics to help you make an informed decision for your home.
Double hung windows are a classic window style that features two vertically sliding sashes. They are a popular choice for homeowners due to their versatility, functionality, and timeless design. The top and bottom sashes can both be opened, allowing for excellent ventilation and easy cleaning.
1. Ventilation:The ability to open both the top and bottom sashes allows for excellent airflow and natural ventilation. This can be particularly beneficial in rooms that require good air circulation, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
2. Easy Cleaning:The sashes on double hung windows can be tilted inwards, making it easy to clean both the interior and exterior glass surfaces without needing to go outside or use a ladder.
3. Energy Efficiency:When properly installed and maintained, double hung windows can provide good energy efficiency. Many modern double hung windows are designed with energy-saving features, such as low-E glass and weatherstripping.
4. Versatility:Double hung windows are suitable for a wide range of architectural styles, from traditional to modern. They are available in various materials, colors, and finishes, making it easy to find a design that complements your home's aesthetic.
1. Limited Opening:While double hung windows offer good ventilation, the actual opening size can be limited. This may not be ideal for rooms that require a large, unobstructed opening, such as a bedroom egress window.
2. Potential for Air Leakage:Due to the sliding mechanism of double hung windows, there is a potential for air leakage around the sashes. This can be minimized with proper installation and weatherstripping, but it is worth considering if energy efficiency is a top priority.
Casement windows are hinged on one side and open outward, typically using a crank handle. They offer a contemporary look and are known for their excellent energy efficiency and unobstructed views.
1. Unobstructed Views:With no horizontal sashes dividing the window, casement windows provide a clear, unobstructed view of the outdoors. This makes them an excellent choice for rooms with picturesque views or for homeowners who value natural light.
2. Energy Efficiency:Casement windows are considered one of the most energy-efficient window styles due to their tight seal when closed. The sash presses against the frame, creating an airtight seal that prevents drafts and air leakage.
3. Ease of Use:The crank handle on casement windows makes them easy to open and close, even for individuals with limited mobility or strength.
4. Security:Casement windows are generally more secure than double hung windows, as they have fewer points of entry and the locking mechanism is embedded within the frame.
1. Limited Ventilation:While casement windows can be opened wide for ventilation, they only open on one side, which may limit the amount of airflow compared to double hung windows.
2. Potential for Damage:Because casement windows open outward, they are more susceptible to damage from strong winds or impact from objects, such as tree branches.
3. Incompatibility with Window Treatments:The crank handle on casement windows can interfere with certain window treatments, such as blinds or curtains, making it more challenging to find a suitable solution.
Ultimately, the choice between double hung windows and casement windows comes down to your personal preferences, needs, and the architectural style of your home. Both window types have their advantages and disadvantages, but with the right selection and proper installation, either option can enhance the beauty, functionality, and energy efficiency of your home.
Consider factors such as ventilation, energy efficiency, ease of cleaning, and aesthetics when making your decision. Consult with a professional window installer to discuss your options and ensure a seamless, energy-efficient installation. With the right choice and expert guidance, you can enjoy the benefits of your new windows for years to come.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
