In the 1950s, casement window hardware experienced a significant transformation, with various designs and materials being introduced to the market. This era marked the beginning of modern window hardware, paving the way for the innovative products we see today. In this blog post, we will take a nostalgic journey through the evolution of 1950s casement window hardware, exploring the various styles, materials, and innovations that emerged during this iconic decade.
The 1950s saw the introduction of aluminum casement windows, which quickly became a popular choice for homeowners due to their lightweight, durable, and low-maintenance properties. These windows featured sleek, modern designs that were a far cry from the traditional wooden casement windows of the past.
Aluminum casement window hardware was designed to complement these new window styles. This hardware was often made from aluminum or zinc alloy, which provided excellent corrosion resistance and ensured a long-lasting, attractive finish. Some of the most popular hardware designs from this era included:
Crank handles:These handles allowed for easy opening and closing of casement windows and were typically mounted on the bottom of the window sash. Crank handles were available in a variety of styles, from simple, unadorned designs to more decorative options featuring intricate patterns and detailing.
Hinges:Casement window hinges underwent a significant transformation in the 1950s, with the introduction of friction hinges. These innovative hinges allowed for smooth, controlled operation of the window, as well as the ability to hold the window open at any angle.
Locks and latches:Casement window locks and latches were designed to provide security and ensure a tight seal when the window was closed. Some popular lock and latch styles from this era included the sliding lock, which featured a small, unobtrusive design, and the more decorative swing lock, which added an element of elegance to the window hardware.
The 1950s was a time of bold, innovative design, and this was certainly reflected in the casement window hardware of the era. The mid-century modern design movement had a significant impact on window hardware, with clean lines, geometric shapes, and minimalist aesthetics becoming increasingly popular.
This new design approach led to the creation of some truly iconic casement window hardware, such as:
Push-button handles:These sleek, modern handles featured a simple push-button mechanism for easy operation and were available in a range of finishes, including polished chrome, brushed nickel, and satin brass.
Concealed hinges:As the name suggests, these hinges were designed to be hidden from view when the window was closed, providing a clean, uncluttered appearance. Concealed hinges were a popular choice for mid-century modern homes, as they complemented the minimalist design aesthetic of the era.
Flush-mounted locks:These locks were mounted flush with the window frame, providing a streamlined, modern look. Flush-mounted locks were often used in conjunction with concealed hinges, creating a seamless, cohesive appearance.
While the 1950s saw the introduction of many new, modern casement window hardware designs, traditional styles remained popular throughout the decade. Homeowners who preferred a more classic look often opted for hardware made from brass or bronze, which offered a timeless, elegant appearance.
Some popular traditional casement window hardware styles from the 1950s included:
Lever handles:These classic handles featured a simple, curved design and were often used in conjunction with a separate locking mechanism. Lever handles were available in a range of finishes, including polished brass, antique brass, and oil-rubbed bronze.
Butt hinges:These traditional hinges were a popular choice for wooden casement windows and featured a simple, unobtrusive design. Butt hinges were typically made from brass or steel and were available in a variety of finishes to suit different window styles.
Sash locks:Sash locks were used to secure the window in the closed position and featured a simple, classic design. These locks were often made from brass or bronze and were available in a range of finishes to complement the window hardware.
The 1950s was a decade of innovation and change, and this was certainly reflected in the casement window hardware of the era. From sleek, modern designs to timeless, traditional styles, the 1950s offered a wealth of options for homeowners looking to update their windows.
Today, many of these classic hardware designs are still available, allowing homeowners to create a nostalgic, retro look in their homes. Whether you're looking to restore a 1950s property or simply want to add a touch of vintage charm to your home, 1950s casement window hardware offers a unique and stylish solution.
Casement windows are the most common style of window. They feature hinged panels that swing open and closed. Casement windows are available in single panels or multiple panels. The direction a door swings, either to the right or the left, is called the handing. In addition to handing, window are identified as either inswing or outswing depending on whether they open into the house or towards the outside.

This newly built private house is in Sydney, Australia. The area occupied by the fenestration system in our scheduled design drawings was up to more than 110 square meters. A wide range of design details made the perfect mix of modern aesthetics and traditional sophistication, the simulated vertical hung windows with tilt & turn opening systems in this home are absolutely breathtaking. SDLS (Simulated Divided Lites with Spacer Bar) brings some historical vintage feeling to the whole building without losing any energy saving performance. Long narrow fixed windows creating larger-than-life expenses, coupled with German high-end systems made this project stand out from the rest.
The client's idea was to maintain a certain vintage feel, and our aim was to meet the energy efficiency needs and standards of modern houses as much as possible while maintaining a retro design. Doorwin’s 61S simulated hung windows with tilt & turn openings is a respectful modernization of a classic architectural masterwork.
Why choose the tilt and turn opening method?
Because it generally has better air seals than sliding, single hung, or double hung window frames. Tilt and turn windows form a complete seal when fully closed, this means they are less prone to water leakage, and cold draughts and you’ll keep more of your heating indoors where it belongs. They can be opened in the upper tilt way to ventilate at a minimum opening status and are easy to clean outside of the glass; when there’s a good day, they can be opened as normal inward casement windows.
Our well-crafted bespoke systems enhance the functionality and panoramic view of this modern house.
Huge, fixed glass walls up to seven meters long and two meters high bring great lighting and open views, making it really refreshing to the mind. Five meters high long narrow windows give the whole building a contemporary aesthetic.
Every window’s placement and shape not only add to the uniqueness of this home but also provide a more energy-saving ability for the owners.
Doorwin energy-efficient integrated glazing units feature double-pane glass, warm-edge spacers, argon gas fill, Low-E coatings, and fully tempered glass, they can not only create a comfortable and natural indoor environment but also save electricity bills and heating bills of more than 100 USD for the owner, it’s a real bargain compared to choosing a regular glazing set.
Aluminum Door offered an air of uniqueness and elegance to a home. With their luxurious patterns and beautiful finishes, it provides this house with a bounty of aesthetics and security. Aluminum entry doors allow you to resist any weather extremes, corrosion, and pests. So aluminum is one of the most resilient and durable materials you can select for front doors considering the price/performance ratio.
With pieces of double panes, and Low-E tempered glass. The door provides a good insulation performance.
Divided lite windows and doors offer unique architectural solutions for buildings without compromising energy efficiency or aesthetics. Doorwin provides multiple muntin and glass options to customize your divided lite windows and doors. Further customization is available with a variety of colors and materials, creating an infinite number of design combinations to best suit your style.
In this project, we use SDLS (simulated divided lites with spacer bars), these bars permanently adhere to both sides of the glass, and spacer bars are installed between the glass, this is the most energy-efficient way to create the look of classical décor grilles. The windows in the bathroom bedroom and study have an Arch Transom Design, making these rooms, which are often used by the owner, have some traditional aesthetics.
