Casement window unit
Accurate measurements are crucial for a successful casement window installation. Measure the width, height, and depth of the opening, and ensure it's square by measuring diagonally from corner to corner. The difference between these two diagonal measurements should be no more than 1/4 inch. If the opening is not square, you will need to make necessary adjustments before proceeding.
Inspect the opening for any damage or rot, and repair or replace any compromised framing members.
Remove any packaging materials and protective films from the casement window unit. Open the window and remove the sash by detaching it from the hinges. This will make the installation process easier and prevent any damage to the sash during installation.
Apply window flashing tape to the sill of the opening, extending it up the sides by at least 6 inches. This will create a waterproof barrier and prevent moisture from seeping into the home.
Now that the opening is prepared, it's time to install the casement window.
Carefully lift the casement window unit and place it in the opening. Center it within the opening and ensure it's sitting on the sill. Use shims to level the window, placing them at the corners and along the sides as needed.
With the window level and centered, secure it to the framing using screws or nails. Start with the top corners, then move to the bottom corners and the middle of the sides. Do not overtighten, as this can cause the window frame to bow.
Before fully securing the window, check for proper operation. Close and lock the window, ensuring the sash is tightly sealed against the frame. If there are any issues, make necessary adjustments before continuing.
Once the window is operating correctly, insulate the gap between the window frame and the rough opening using low-expanding foam insulation or fiberglass insulation. Be sure not to overpack the insulation, as this can cause the window frame to bow.
Next, apply window flashing tape to the sides and top of the window, overlapping the tape on the sill. This will create a continuous waterproof barrier around the window.
Finally, apply a bead of exterior-grade caulk around the perimeter of the window, sealing the gap between the window frame and the home's exterior.
With the casement window installed, it's time to add the finishing touches.
Reattach the casement window sash by aligning it with the hinges and securing it in place. Test the window again to ensure proper operation.
Measure and cut the interior window trim to size, then secure it in place using finishing nails. Fill any gaps or nail holes with wood filler and sand smooth. Paint or stain the trim to match the rest of your home's interior.
